The Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug Legolas and Tauriel banner

Earlier this summer, we saw the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which saw the return of Orlando Bloom as the elf Legolas and introduced a new character, the female elf Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).

This morning, Bloom and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) made an appearance on NBC’s Today Show to introduce a preview of a new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. The trailer now been released online, so watch it here below!

While the first trailer released was more solemn and serious – and gave a good look at the dragon Smaug – this new trailer is more action-packed, showing off Bloom’s Legolas in action, as well as McKellen’s wizard Gandalf and Bilbo and the dwarves continuing their quest. The first trailer also gave a good look at the mighty dragon Smaug, this new ones give us our first listen at Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the mighty dragon.

The upcoming film, which is the second installment in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy kicked off with 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, follows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and his band of fearless dwarves, and Gandalf the Grey on a quest to obtain the gold and treasure stolen by Smaug.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, and many more. WB will release the film into theaters on December 13, 2013, with the final installment, There And Back Again, coming to theaters in 2014.

By the way, on the Today Show, host Natalie Morales pronounced Smaug as “Smowg” (like the “ou” sound in “ouch”) which is how Peter Jackson says it, but as the footage rolled, it sounded by McKellen corrected her, saying it’s “Smorg” (or “sm-aww-g”).
