Glee begins its swan song tonight with a 2-part opener that brings everyone back home to Lima, Ohio. Although some feel that the show should have ended before the main members graduated, ending it this year does feel right.
Glee has always really been about misfits (ok – really pretty misfits) coming together and singing (and sometimes dancing) their feelings. It’s cheesy, it’s campy, it really stretches the boundaries on what actually happens in high school, but it still has what draw Gleeks to it in the first place – the songs. I still YouTube certain favorites like the “Dream On” duet by Matthew Morrison and Neil Patrick Harris (who hit the high note!); “Forget You” by Holly Holiday (Gwyneth Paltrow); the entire Rocky Horror episode, Artie (Kevin McHale) doing the “Safety Dance”; the Warblers singing “Teenage Dream” or singing anything; Puck (Mark Salling) singing “Beth” by KISS; and so much more.
Anyone who loves musicals loves Glee. I will be sad when this very original show ends. Glee 6.1 “Loser Like Me” musically delivers.
So first…here’s what you missed on Glee (season 5):
Fox’s press release:
Rachel (Lea Michele) returns homes to Lima to figure out what she wants to do next, after her humiliating failure as a TV actress. Upon discovering that Sue (Jane Lynch) has banished the arts at McKinley, Rachel takes it upon herself to reinstate and lead the glee club. Meanwhile, Blaine (Darren Criss), no longer in a relationship with Kurt (Chris Colfer), has moved home to coach the Warblers, while Will (Matthew Morrison) is coaching rival Vocal Adrenaline, and Sam (Chord Overstreet) is the assistant coach for the McKinley High football team in the all-new “Loser Like Me” Season Premiere, Part One episode of GLEE airing Friday, Jan. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
The songs:
1. “Uninvited” (Alanis Morrisette) sung by Rachel Berry soulfully as she leaves the set of her failed career.
2. “Suddenly Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors with Blaine playing piano to Rachel. She joins in the duet.
3. “Sing” (Ed Sheeran) sung by The Warblers (my fave).
4. “Dance The Night Away” (Van Halen) perfectly performed by Vocal Adrenaline.
5. “Let It Go” (Idina Menzel from the movie….oh you know where that’s from!) by Rachel Berry. That song was made for her to sing. And since Idina Menzel plays Rachel’s birth mom, it seems appropriate.
Mr. Shue is still handing out Saget-bombs like “The future will judge you based on what you do to come back from it.”
And wait until you see Blaine’s new boyfriend!
