UPDATE 2/6/08: Autopsy results reveal that Ledger’s death was an accidental overdose, specifically of “acute intoxication” from a combination of two strong painkillers, two anti-anxiety medicines, and two sleeping aids. [Source].
Actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in a Manhattan apartment, according to New York City police. He was 28.
At this time, the actor’s death appears to be either a suicide or an accidental overdose. Ledger was found naked and unconscious by the housekeeper and the masseuse, and there were prescription and non-prescription sleeping pills on the night table. They tried to revive him, but he did not respond. Police do not suspect foul play; an autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday.
Ledger was born Heathcliff Andrew Ledger on April 4, 1979 and was raised in Perth, Australia. His first Hollywood film was in the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. He also had lead roles in A Knight’s Tale and Casanova. But it was his stand-out role in Brokeback Mountain that earned him an Oscar nod for Best Actor in 2006.
Ledger will appear in this summer’s highly anticipated Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight as The Joker. Fans of the franchise had high hopes that Ledger would do the role justice. The actor was also set to star in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which is currently filming.
Ledger leaves behind Matilda Rose, his 2-year-old daughter with former fiancee and Brokeback co-star Michelle Williams.

If I hadn’t seen this in the NY Times, I would have thought it was a joke. I can’t even believe this. He was a really good actor, I enjoyed him in all his movies, but apparently, he was never happy with himself or his performances. How sad and unfortunate. I think all of us will look at The Dark Knight a lot differently now. It will definitely be on everyone’s minds.

when heath’s joker was first revealed, i remember a lot of people (including myself) saying how the makeup resembled “the crow” in some ways.
it’s eerie to think of that now, given the tragic events that occurred in that film.
so sad, such a tragedy. :(

there’s nothing eerie about it, one died on set accidentally the other overdosed…quite a stretch.
it’s odd to think of someone questioning their career as an influence to their suicide when no one forces them to take the roles they do.
I always thought he was better than what people expected from him from his early movies, and I was happy to see him get beyond those early roles with brokeback, I’m not there…
if it were suicide i doubt we’ll be lucky enough to find an all revealing letter..

mo, did you even read what i wrote? “when heath’s joker was first revealed, i remember a lot of people (including myself) saying how the makeup resembled “the crow†in some ways.”
THAT’S why it’s eerie, because of the comparison some people were making at first, and now he’s also dead before the film’s release. i wasn’t making a comparison on how they died – just the fact that people thought the joker makeup was similar to the crow makeup.

Another actor taken when his career was beginning to boom
The Hollywood disease strikes again – regardless of the drugs he or anyone else has taken, they seem too readily available to those with too much time on their hands.
The Dark Knight will be weird to watch known now that it is essentially his legacy.
