Just what we need — more remakes!
THR reports from Cannes that MGM is looking into remaking Red Dawn.
MGM studio heads Harry Sloan and Mary Parent also confirmed that the RoboCop planned remake MGM announced in March might still happen.
Other than the possibility of MGM making these films, there’s no other information.
The original 1987 Paul Verhoeven-directed RoboCop starred Peter Weller as the title character, a murdered cop who is then rebuilt into a cyborg super cop. While highly unnecessary, a RoboCop remake just might work in this decade, if the right creative team is behind it.
Not so much for Red Dawn, the 1984 John Milius-directed film which starred ’80s Brat-Packers Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, and [my personal favorite] C. Thomas Howell as American high school students turned guerrilla soldiers during an invasion of the United States by communist forces.
In the 1980s when the United States and the Soviet Union were adversaries, this was a frightening tale because of the possibility of an invasion like that actually occurring. I highly doubt a teenager today would even blink at the word “Communist” let alone fear an attack like this — even if the upcoming Indiana Jones film’s antagonists are Communists (set in the 1950s though). If the filmmakers keep the “red” in Red Dawn, then I’ll applaud them; if this becomes Brown Dawn, then please count me out.
I’m not eager on either one.

ya know, instead of creating remakes, why don’t they just RE-RELEASE the original movies in the theaters again for audiences that may have never got to see the originals in a theater. It’s one thing to remake movies that are 50+ years old (although I hope I never see a Wizard of Oz remake or any other classic remade) but it’s another thing to remake movies that have been already well-created.

They must be going down a list of movies scored by Basil Poledouris.
“Conan… check! Red Dawn… check! RoboCop — oh yeah, RoboCop, huh… check!”
