After drifting in and out of production hell for a few years, it appears that Voltron: Defender of the Universe will be moving forward once again. Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the movie behind Fox’s New Regency with Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn attached to produce.
Apparently one of the big problems was how much it would cost (obviously; it’s freakin’ Voltron) and that’s what kept holding it back. The solution: green screen! But of course. In order to have a more “moderate” budget, the studios will take the path paved by 300 and hope to achieve Transformers success. This decision is catching a lot of eyes and has a lot of people scratching their collective heads, but eh, we’ll see what happens I guess.
Personally, this project seems cursed from the get-go as it’s always going to be directly in the shadow of Optimus Prime throughout its production and release. But then again, when you’re up against Michael Bay, you always have a shot to come out the victor, I guess.
The script is written by Justin Marks (recently mentioned in our New “˜He-Man’ Is A “˜Batman Begins-ification’ story), who is currently a pretty popular writer, especially in the fanboy realms. Marks describes the Voltron script, saying it follows five survivors of an alien attack who each individually pilot lion-like robots and join up to form Voltron and fight the aliens. It is set in New York and Mexico.
Sounds interesting.

this movie will pose quite a challenge.. part of me would love to see this movie done in the fantasy world which it was derived.. and the other half has become a bit “batman begins-ified”.. either way i cant wait for this movie.. i nominate Keanu Reeves for the role of Keith or Lance.. and Gwyneth Paltrow for Allura.. maybe Jack Black as Hunk? lol imagine that..

I think the cast would be younger than Keanu and Gwyneth.
If he hadn’t been in a similar costume in Speed Racer, I would pitch Emile Hirsch as Keith.
Elijah Wood would be perfect as Pidge, no matter how old the cast.
