After many years of rumors and whispers and a lengthy stay in development hell, and 32 years after the original was released, Top Gun 2 has officially begun production.
The news was shared by original star Tom Cruise, who’s set to reprise his role as Maverick in the follow-up, in a tweet sent out last night. More info on the sequel and Cruise’s tweet can be found below.
Not a whole lot is currently known about Top Gun 2, which will apparently be titled Top Gun: Maverick.
It’s said that the movie will follow modern-day fighter pilots as they struggle with the increasing use of unmanned drone technology that’s making it less and less necessary to use human pilots.
Directing the sequel is Joseph Kosinski, who’s worked with Cruise before on 2013’s Oblivion. Kosinski also directed another sequel to a 1980s favorite, 2010’s TRON: Legacy, as well as last year’s Only the Brave.
The screenplay is penned by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book, Counterpart), Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle, The International), and Peter Craig (The Hunger Games, The Town).
Cruise isn’t the only one involved with the original who’s returning for the long-awaited follow-up. Composer Harold Faltermeyer is also back to create music for the sequel, and Jerry Bruckheimer is back producing once again. Also producing is David Ellison of Skydance Media, as well as Cruise.
Top Gun 2 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 12, 2019.
