Good news, everyone!
Recently we shared a great little video which combined clips from Futurama and the Watchmen movie trailer. In this little gem, I made mention of someone, like maybe Comedy Central, being the ones who are smart enough to bring Futurama back to TV.
After posting this story, I checked out HippoJuice, the fine folks who lead us to the Watchmen video. On their site, they had just hit Supercon in Florida, where they had the opportunity to interview voice master Billy West of Futurama fame. Before the interview, Mr. West sat in front of a small crowd a shared a little golden nugget, explaining that because of the success of the four straight-to-DVD Futurama movies that have been made, Fox was now pondering a possible 6th season of the show!
Click over for the video of this announcement and the Billy West interview.
As we all are well-aware, Fox has a nice streak of canceling shows before anyone even sees them: Family Guy and Firefly being the prime examples of this. Futurama had a strong multi-season run, which makes it the most questionable cancellation of them all (Keep King of the Hill, cancel Futurama? Seriously, guys?). On the other hand, at least, Fox realized their mistake with Family Guy, and is apparently seeing the mistake again with Futurama. We can only hope that this means that once they inevitably cancel Dollhouse, they’ll have a similar Firefly realization.
Of course, this is all yet to be seen. While Fox is indeed thinking about it, that doesn’t mean the 6th season will actually get the green light. It’s always nice to have a little ray of hope, though.
i’m more psyched about a recent interview with matt groening where he said that fox was happy with the sales and made a point that they won’t make a decision on another season or more dvd’s until they see how this last one does. i like billy west but actors tend to go by hearsay… matt knows a lot more. so both pieces can be very exciting. and the fact that fox had a screening for the last dvd movies with matt there maybe shows they think this thing could do better with some publicity… something the last 3 movies completely lacked.
