Fans of DC Comics premier superhero have been happy for the last few months with the resurgence of the entire line, largely under the hands of writers Geoff Johns, James Robinson, Greg Rucka, and Sterling Gates, and they should know that the writers have a lot planned for the Big Blue Boy Scout in the coming months.
Here’s some of the news that come out of the San Diego Comic-Con panel on Superman:
Codename: Patriot will be the name of the next big storyline through all the books, and will place more of an emphasis on what’s been going on with the planet Earth while Supes has been away on New Krypton. The story will focus on Lois Lane’s father, General Lane, and will be the next step towards a BIG Superman event coming up in 2010. Codename: Patriot will be a big game changer and will affect all the characters for the next year. There will also be a Superman: Secret Files out to tie-in with Code.
The Young Justice era Teen Titans will be showing up in Geoff Johns’ Adventure Comics, as well as having what the creators call one of the best Krypto the Super-Dog scenes ever.
Superman: Secret Origins will be out in September and is said to feature some great Gary Frank art, who Geoff Johns says is the perfect artist to portray Superman. The series will act in a similar way as Johns’ recent Green Lantern: Secret Origins storyline, although will be less focused on fleshing out the current storyline, and more focused on setting out Superman’s origin for the first time since Infinite Crisis. This is a 12-issue mini.
Supergirl and Action Comics will be crossing over in September and October for a storyline called Hunt for Reactron. The story will show how Nightwing and Flamebird will interact with Supergirl, and will feature huge action and big moments. The first Supergirl annual will be out in November, and will have two stories, one of which shows the history of Superwoman.
The crossover will affect Nightwing and Flamebird when they go back to Action Comics which will lead to a storyline which should to some big destruction in Metropolis.
Worlds of New Krypton will continue with a story showing how the Thanagarians will affect New Krypton, and will feature a great cover by Gary Frank (the cover will be released in two weeks) as well as a variant by Joe Kubert. The story after that will show how Jim, the Son of Saturn, deals with the Kryptonians, and will set him up as an “alien version of Namor.” These series will end with a big three-part story which will tie together the whole series.
The next big storyline in James Robinson‘s Superman will be called Mon-el: Man of Valor and will show what happens when Mon-el returns to Metropolis after two issues with a darker outlook and a new costume which will be revealed at another panel. Also coming out is the next Superman annual which will reveal the history of Mon-El’s homeworld of Daxam, as well as a Jimmy Olsen special which will tie in to Codename: Patriot.
Coming out in October, Sterling Gates will write a miniseries with art by Julian Lopez (starting in October) titled World’s Finest. This series will show how the Superman characters will deal with the loss of Batman. Each issue will feature a different Superman character teaming up with a different Batman character, so issue one will feature Nightwing and Red Robin, issue two will have Guardian and the new Robin, issue three will be Supergirl and the new Batgirl, and it will finish up with Dick Grayson Batman and Superman.
The other news out of the panel, although it’s not related to Superman, is that Greg Rucka will be returning to the world of Wonder Woman in November, when he writes Blackest Night: Wonder Woman.
Thanks for the round up – I’m especially looking forward to the return of J’emm, Son of Saturn.
