Remember when it was reported that Henry Cavill departed from the role of Superman after talks between WB and Cavill’s WME reps for a Shazam! cameo fell through? Well, that appears to have been an over exaggeration. At least, that’s what Aquaman star Jason Momoa is saying. The actor, who played the King of Atlantis alongside the Man of Steel in last year’s Justice League, says Cavill is not giving up the role.
So what about those reports that Warner Bros. is not only not moving forward with any new Superman projects but instead making Supergirl a high priority? More on all of that below.
Momoa spoke to Entertainment Tonight at the red carpet premiere of Aquaman. When asked if there was any truth to Cavill stepping down, Momoa said “absolutely not.” He added, “He loves the character and he’s not. One hundred percent.”
The reporter then followed it up with, “so that’s not going to happen.” To which Momoa said, “No, it’s absolutely not.”
Here’s the video of the interview which was posted on Entertainment Tonight’s official Twitter account:
Let’s just say that this heavily conflicts with what has been reported in the past. However, we have to remember, that despite all of the moves that WB has been making, including shifting its focus to the Supergirl movie, which is being scripted by 22 Jump Street scribe Oren Uziel, they have not confirmed that Cavill is no longer playing Superman. Even Cavill has not confirmed the news.
Adding to the confusion was a vague video of the actor seemingly making light of the situation in an Instagram video that was posted shortly after the news of his departure was reported. He was seen wearing a “Krypton Lift Team” shirt, raising up a Superman action figure, with waltz music with a barking dog playing in the background. Additionally, the caption “Today was exciting. #Superman” was attached to the video:
Soon after the report was made, WB came out with a statement addressing everything. Here’s what the WB rep said:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
So by all accounts, we should consider that Cavill will still don the cape and S shield either in his own film, another hero’s film, or an ensemble film like Justice League. When and if that will be remains to be seen. Until then, we will keep you updated as soon as anything new comes up.
