UPDATE: Latino Review went directly to Guillermo del Toro to find out what they could about all of this. His answer: it’s all “speculative” so far. This kills off the rumor at the moment, but again, a third bridge movie makes a lot of sense, so do not be surprised to hear more in the future.
Rumors seem to be in bloom as of late, and they’re never fun because we just don’t know how true or not they are. Sometimes these rumors happen to make a lot of sense, and even if not yet confirmed, they’re worthy of mention.
Cue MarketSaw.
The 3-D focused website has word from what they call one of their “most trusted” sources that the much-talked about bridge movie that would connect The Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings trilogy may still be happening as a third movie. On top of that, the source claims that the god of Middle Earth himself, Peter Jackson, could be the one to direct the third film.
If you’re not familiar with the tale, it began long ago when we were told that we would be getting two new movies in that world: one, an adaptation of The Hobbit, and a second one that bridged that world to Lord of the Rings. After months of speculation, we finally were informed that visionary master Guillermo del Toro would be taking up the reigns to direct the two films. A tad bit later, del Toro and Jackson (who is producing the two movies) decided that to be as faithful to the book as possible, it would be best to use both films to make a two-part Hobbit instead of doing the connecting story (Read: “˜The Hobbit’ To Be Two Movies; Bridge Movie Canceled?).
Again, this is just a rumor at the moment, but unlike other rumors, this makes all the sense in the world, and it SHOULD be done. The bridge movie was to be an original story that connected the two worlds, and this was something that pissed many people off. But the fact is: this is a completely new movie and the last chance to bring back all of the great characters that fans miss so much from the original trilogy that didn’t exist in the time frame of The Hobbit. Plus, as disastrous as it COULD be, the chance to see an original story in that world, created by Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro — I have to think there’s a much better chance of that movie being amazing than anything else.
Here’s the quote from the source as to what’s going on. Also included are rumors that the movies will be in 3-D, as well as how Smaug is being developed (as we’ve heard, they’re working on that dragon alone for about eight months).
Smaug will be a mixture of practical and animation …going purely on practical, the design rocks. I think THE HOBBIT may be a different beast to the book, at least in terms of going darker. And judging from Smaug “and the Gollum tweaks” will be something to rival the previous attempts at the very least. It is still very lock and key at the moment. I can tell you this, Peter Jackson is very keen to have the two part Hobbit tale set in 3D. Del Toro however is holding back on that school of thought. At least for the time being. Im hearing word “and its only speculation at the moment”, that it wont be two films. It will be three. The two parts and the bridge movie. Word alone is not trustworthy. However I hear this from lots of people. And have seen things to indicate this may be the way it is heading. Del Toro on Hobbit duty, Jackson on the bridge project. Time will tell.
This of course is all to be taken with a grain of salt, but also with all digits crossed that it will be confirmed at some point soon!

This whole idea is bullshit. Why create a new story when there are literally hundreds more stories about middle earth written by Tolkien? If you want more middle earth why not go to the 15 or so books written about its history instead of making a random story that cannot be as good as a tolkien original?
