This is one of those odd casting announcements that kind of comes out of left field. It might have been something that wasn’t supposed to be known yet; it might end up being a complete misunderstanding. But for the moment, it is straight from the mouth of one of the stars, so we all run with it.
While speaking to MTV recently about her upcoming movie with Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal, Brothers, Natalie Portman was prompted to talk about her upcoming role in Thor and who of the fantastic and still-growing cast she was most excited to be working with. Portman surprised the interviewer and all who have since watched the video with her response: “Well I’m really excited, Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she’s a good friend and an amazing actress, so I’m looking forward to that,” the actress revealed. This is not a casting announcement that had been officially made yet, so now everyone is wondering who Miss Dennings could be playing.
Kat Dennings is still a very young actress, but at 23-years-old, she already has a fitting 23 credits to her name. She is best known from a trio of performances: first catching eyes as the angry and confused teenage daughter of Catherine Keener in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. She then moved on to a role in Charlie Bartlett alongside Anton Yelchin, and a title role in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist alongside Michael Cera.
Most of the actors cast in director Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor so far are relatively unknowns and classically trained thespians, but no American actors until Portman and now Dennings. Natalie is playing Thor’s mortal soulmate Jane Foster, but who will Dennings play? Many seem to think she will be some kind of Asgardian Goddess, but I personally have a feeling that she will be another mortal character — possibly a friend of Portman’s character or something along those lines.
Being someone who has no familiarity with Thor, these are mere guesses. Who do you guys think she could be?
Thor stars Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding hero. It also stars Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson and the recently-announced trio of Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano as the Warriors Three. The movie will be unleashed upon the world on May 20, 2011.
