The first trailer for Universal Pictures’ Devil has been released online. The movie is brought to us by producer M. Night Shyamalan, whose current film The Last Airbender is making decent money while simultaneously being critically eviscerated.
While Shyamalan is a producer on the project, Devil is being directed by John Erick Dowdle. Dowdle has previously directed The Poughkeepsie Tapes and [REC] remake, Quarantine. The movie stars Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, Jenny O’Hara, Bokeem Woodbine, and Jacob Vargas.

Not too much is known about the movie thus far. The current synopsis literally only says “Devil is a supernatural thriller with M. Night Shyamalan’s signature touch.” This may not be the best route to take, all things considered.
For some, it was post Signs. For a small group of others (myself included) it was after The Village. For an even smaller group, it may have been later than that. No matter where you stand, it’s clear that Mr. Shyamalan has lost something along the way. This does suck because he seems like a cool guy and he got off to a “Wow, this dude is going to be legendary!” start, but it is the painful truth nevertheless. So the question becomes why are they pushing this new flick on the Shyamalan name?
Yes, despite the the destruction he’s received by critics, Shyamalan’s movies have still made decent money at the box office. Even so, watching this trailer makes me think that a nice, simple viral campaign with no names whatsoever would have people more curious about Devil. Instead, many of the M. Night anti-fans no might have no interest at all simply because they’re pushing it as from his brain…and he’s just producing! Seems unfair to John Erick Dowdle in the very least.
Check it out and see what you think. You can also check out the HD trailer at Apple.
Concept wise, looks like it could be quite good. Unfortunately, like a lot of concept films, it all comes down to the third act and the resolution, and that’s usually a downer.

I’m in the “he lost his touch after the Village” camp…but ooooo…this looks like it has potential! Bring back the scary!

He makes great trailers…that’s all we can say. Wait for the dollar theater and see if he earns his way back into our movie collections
