Sweets is a five-issue miniseries written and drawn by Kody Chamberlain. The miniseries is a crime tale set in New Orleans just days before Hurricane Katrina makes landfall. A serial killer is on the loose and has piled up a massive amount of victims in a killing spree around New Orleans. Detective Curt Delatte has already had a bad few weeks. His daughter was killed in a hit and run. His wife wants a divorce and now he must search for this ruthless serial killer.
Sweets is a definite must-read if you’re into crime stories like Criminal and Scalped. The biggest difference between those books and Sweets, is that Chamberlain brings a rare blend of storytelling to the readers. Sweets reads like a crime film, in which the reader is glued to the book and they never want it to end.
The book also offers several points of view. We not only get the detective’s timeline in his search for the killer, we also get glimpses of what the killer is up to. Throughout the first two issues, we don’t know the killer’s true motives but if you look hard enough, you’ll pick up on clues to what the story is building up to it.
Chamberlain’s art really compliments the fantastic story that he also wrote. It was great to see the city of New Orleans through Chamberlain’s pencils. The gritty art style works perfectly for the content in the book. The choice of colors within these first two issues is also a nice detail for the series.
As stated before, Sweets is an excellent read if you’re a fan of the crime genre. If you’re looking for something original and thrilling, definitely give Sweets a read. You will not be disappointed.
