E3 2011: ‘Fable 4’ Looks To Bring Kinect To The Next Level; See Trailer & Gameplay Demo Now!
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

Fable has turned into an interesting franchise for Peter Molyneaux and his Lionhead Studios. Each game has come with unbelievable promises, and each””while still enjoyable for many players in terms of basic entertainment””has failed to live up to a lot of the overall hype.

That’s not stopping Molyneaux from continuing to try and reach beyond the stars for the next installment in the Fable franchise, however, with the not-so-surprising announcement of a Fable 4, more officially titled Fable: The Journey. The new game takes a major turn from its predecessors, and it’s this move that will see it gaining (and perhaps losing) many fans.

Be sure to continue reading to learn much more and to see not only the first cinematic trailer for Fable: The Journey, but to see a gameplay demo as well, so you can decide whether you’re in, out, or undecided.

Now, the very moments we first heard about Kinect (then called Project Natal), Molyneaux had a demo prepared showing off the possibilities of the new technology that featured a little boy named Milo. The demo blew people’s minds and got us all very excited about what was to come, but unfortunately all we’ve really seen since then are a bunch of glorified Wii games. I personally have said many, many times that one of the best games we could see using the Kinect would be a Fable game that mixed the interactions we saw in the Milo video and the gameplay we’re used to in Fable games. Well, as much as I doubted we would ever see such a thing, the next installment is along those lines…though, as a fan of the series, not so much how I hoped

See, this new Fable adventure takes place in a time “when heroes are no longer born””they must be made” where you’ll play as a Dweller. But the gameplay itself looks like it gets rid of the third-person perspective we’re so used to and goes into a new first-person mode. It also looks like the entire game could be played using only the Kinect and no controller whatsoever””something that was rumored for Fable III back in 2009.

We’ve only see the two small peeks you can watch below so far and there should be much more information coming soon, but as far as Microsoft and Lionhead’s assumption that the future of gaming has no controllers, this new Fable would certainly make sense if it is indeed all played on Kinect. The problem with that is that there’s a whole hell of a lot of people (myself very much included) who want nothing to do with “controller-less” gaming, and that could put Fable in a tough spot.

If there’s an option for those who don’t have Kinect or don’t want to play on Kinect, fine, that makes perfect sense. And hell, the game actually looks pretty awesome for those who enjoy motion gaming…it’s just impossible for me to get excited about a game I play touching nothing but air. It still feels like way too much of a novelty that won’t stick, much like 3D movies.

What about you? Watch the videos below and share what you think of this new Kinect-happy Fable game.

  2. I don’t think it seemed like anybody was touting this game as Fable 4.  The Journey looked much more like a side game in the series.  Similar to what EA did with Dead Space Extraction or what Microsoft has done with the Halo series in Wars, ODST and Reach.  I’m guessing we’ll see a direct numbered sequel to Fable down the road, with a more traditional play style.

  3. Please go back to the control system!  The story doesn’t seem to be much of a problem but Fable fans don’t want to play a level and ‘feel the magic’ they want to SEE their character grow (good or evil, old or young).  I loved Fable 1-3 and yes promises weren’t kept but I would NEVER buy this unless it had the same format and contorls as the other three.

  7. I agree with Blathers…Crap! I LOVE the Fable games and this Kinect only game will put a hurt on Lionhead. I don’t have a Kinect and I do not want one. Molyneaux touts that you can play sitting down, so! I can do that with a controller. Another thing is you don’t get to control where the character goes, unless you are in the carriage, which is stupid. Fable is based on free roaming and just riding from one battle to the next is stupid. I REALLY hope they are just testing the waters with this and get back to the real game. Which I hope would be a prequel or at least a fill in between 1 and 2.

  10. So are we going to be able to play it with a controller still and have even more freedom then the last game or are we going to be stuck with Kinect and have almost no freedom at all and stuck with a rail esk game it would seem. If that is the case then it already seems that alot of people are already dissapointed. You can’t take a third person view game with freedom of movement and everything and turn it into a first person rail game that is meant for the Wii. Gosh please make it for the controller third person based players. I mean yeah first person is fun but it is only good when you can do whatever like the elder scrolls. If this game is only going to be like this then it won’t sell very well. It might be a good game but just the way it works will make a lot of people very dissapointed.

  11. Graphics look, good the rest looks crap. This is something he said a little while ago it just amused me lol “Molyneux emphasizes that Fable attracts through
its quirky adventures, ideas and world, not just through nitty-gritty
action and technical achievements like first-person shooters do” haha! what an idiot everyone moaned about him and the direction of the games but I stuck up for him thinking they were good but if he’s going to do this he’s going to loose a lot of fans including me. I’m quite happy with the memories I’ve got.

  12. I love the Fable series and I also love first person. I think it’ll be a great new experience. But the whole idea of it being for the Kinect kinda scares me. I’ve always been the type for controller gaming and I’ve never even like the Wii, because of that. I will give it a try. But it does seem to be taking a great idea that everyone loved and they keep changing it and changing it till all of us original fans think “Crap”. Even the third game was really good in my opinion, but it seemed to push you into the main story line more then ever. I loved how fable was all about choice and now it seems more like a route to take and less like a journey to make.

    Comment by Nathan Manley — June 9, 2011 @ 3:00 am

  13. The whole reason I ever played the first fable games was to actually see your own character. You were able to pick out which ever armor you wanted as well as how you looked and whatever weapon you desired. Personally I do like how the kinect is oriented into this new one with the motion aspect. But bringing this game into 1st person instead of 3rd definitely ruins what the franchise built for. You can’t see anything anymore which destroys the original game concept. Another game I saw from kinect was the new star wars game. I liked how you were actually in the game. With fighting with the lightsaber, jumping, moving forward, and using the force. That game is 3rd person and looks great. Would it have been that hard to keep it 3rd person instead of destroying a perfectly good franchise?

  17. Mr.Molyneux needs to do some reviewing. He needs to look around and see what people want in Fable 4. I wanted Fable 4 to go back to the Old Kingdom. A lot of people suggested mounts, maybe. I thought that would be very fun. Anyways, he’s changing the series in a bad way. People who’ve played any of the Fable games and liked them don’t want Kinect anywhere in the business. Or first person. There may be only a few GOOD RPGs that can pull off first person. I recently took part in some brainstorming, in which Fable fans complained about and suggested things that could improve the series. One: Returning to the Old Kingdom, maybe right after the events of Fable 1. Two: NO KINECT OR FIRST PERSON! Three: Maybe, improving the glitches. There were so many in Fable 2, it was impossible to count. Four: Ohhh, I don’t know… Maybe, stop trying to appeal to a more childish audience. An example: You move the game to Kinect and add silly, overly humorous dialogue, then you ruin everything. Fable fans, I think, have always enjoyed the funny in the series, but, in my opinion, it’s gotten out of hand. In Fable 2, I found that around every corner it was some stupid side-quest that, honestly, tried too hard to be funny. I will admit, I did enjoy the games, but I found so many flaws. And (a small thing), me being a girl, I thought some of the… gestures in the last two games were too manly. xD I mean come on, the Vulgar Thrust. Really? Anyways, Molyneux, all I have to say is, find out what your fans want in a game, and make it happen.

  18. It was stated at E3 Interview with G4, Peter Molyneux stated that Fable the Journey is not actually fable 4 because it doesn’t focus on the bloodline. This came is the product of Microsoft asking lionstudios to make a core game for kinect. Most likey a Fable 4 titled Fable 4 will be anounced sometime after this game if not sooner, I hope sooner.

    Comment by Adam — June 21, 2011 @ 3:43 pm

  19. This is perhaps why they didn’t call it fable 4, because they are “experimenting”, testing the water so to speak, on how it will take on Kinect. Answer for me is no, i’ll buy it and get the kinect because im a huge fable fan but I don’t think it will be as good. 3rd person view made fable what it is, though it will be interesting to see, I do think kinect is a fad. They should have stuck with that game of a virtual child u could talk to and interact with etc, that would have sold billions!!!!

  20. for kinect users this game looks good. i personally love the fable series ive beaten every game atleast 8 times and this would definitely kill it for me because i prefer the controller rather than waving my hands in the air and through out the years the story has been getting worse, and i dont understand how you go from a third person rpg, to first person. this game wont make a lot of profit

  22. Compared to other kinect titles it looks good and im glad its not on rails as well, the magic system seems to be cool but they’ll need to work really hard on it to make it a good game part of fable that I really like is that you can wander around and explore. Ill probably get it though since I am a big fable fan. THough still I was glad to hear that this isnt Fable four probably a in betweenquel since Peter said in his interview that this will be taking place right after Fabel 3. Fable 4 though better be a game were you get to use the controller.

  24. it looks like a decent game but its just not fable it has all of the fable enemies and names in it but its not fable. it doesnt even make sence that theresa would be with this guy he isnt part of her bloodline and technicly the hero from fable 3 should still be alive and healthy considering this takes place soon after fable 3 so why cant they just take care of this. Also i know that reaver has to still be alive i know he is aragant and evil but he is still a hero why cant we play as him in this game. Im just mad because my character in this game wont really be mine cause i dont get to make him and i dont like that he really has nothing to do with any of the other characters

  27. I think the storyline looks brilliant, and it sounds a lot of fun, but the way you play it looks awful. I love kinect, but I do not think Fable should be a kinect game at all, spin off or not. I am a HUGE fan of the Fable Franchise. I have all three games, Fable 3 in limited collecters edition (and lost chapters), I have the book, I have the strategy guides (even though I dont use them), I even have the xbox pad. I LOVE Fable. But I’m sorry, I don’t think I’ll like this one at all. I am going to give it a go, on the tiny off chance that I might enjoy it, though I know I most probably won’t. And if I don’t and if there are any more games after this one that are similar, I wont buy them, because I know that I will have given up on Fable by then.

  28. I’m disappointed with how Fable is becoming. I loved Fable 1 and Fable 2, Fable 3 was okay but still disappointing as well. It seems Fable: The journey will be even worse. So much for living up to a persons expectations.

    Comment by Jose — June 26, 2011 @ 11:21 pm

  29. Peter, you are ruining a great game. Fable 1 was good because you got to see and make your character into whatever you wanted, and there was a wide selection of weapons, but this new “The journey” is stopping all creativity. Fable was meant to be a free roam, 3rd person, RPG. not some some ghetto rail game that YOU peter, decide what we look like, talk like, and kill like. you need to put some creativity into the game. I’ve been playing fable since the first one came out. I’m a 12 year old gamer that has beat every single fable at least 12 times except for the third game. the third one sucked. but i get adult humor, i know more “adult” jokes that the average adult, i know a lot about what adults think is funny, but your trying to keep your audience at a low age. you should make each game more vulgar and have more adult humor each game.and one last thing, the thing i love the most, is creative killing, include some brutal assassinations and some creative psychological face to face killing. just make fable 4 as good as the 1st one. if you don’t file for bank ruptsy after this game

  31. fable one they had a bunch of books talking about the dragons i was for sure they were going to bring them into fable 2  but that was just another disappointment.  then fable 2 had the mad all messed up, saying it took 80 some hours to travel to this other location, it made the maybe feel confusing and not complete.

    Comment by Oemig8 — June 28, 2011 @ 2:19 pm

  32. I like the magic system, I agree that the idea of really molding magic with my hands is appealing, although I assume there will be a lot of limitations and won’t really live up to my expectations. The track idea sounds awful, bring back the proper free roam! I loved the way you could go where you want when you want like in the first fable, mounts are great but you shouldn’t lose the original appeal so you can introduce them. Why not use them like in Assassin’s creed brotherhood. It seems like you have very little input to how your character developed, Fable was great because you could be a bastard or a saint and that it could be affected by everything you do. The games went downhill with the second and third, they gave you routes that were too definitive, you either did something bad or something good. BRING BACK PROPER ARMOUR AND WEAPONS!!!! What was the idea of 3? It changed clothes into fashion statements rather than having any affect on the characters defence and abilities. So in general, just bring back the original fable but with better graphics!

  35. Hopefully someone at liongate sees this website. because they would see that all the comments are incredibly negative. this is because we are all dedicated fans of a great game series that we dont want to see ruined…
My favorite comment of the video was “its an open world in as much as a road can be”… Really? Really? listen to that… the game is screwed, and at this point they are not going to change it. I guess they just were under allot of market pressure to make a connect game or something but it wont be long till they realize they fucked up. 2012

What the fans are saying is right: Old kingdom, Open World, Entirely individualized characters, Quests that get you things and take you down different paths.

Putting a cart on a road and saying its fable because there are still hobbes and magic is a cop out… I wish someone else could take over the franchise. or if they would just hire a fan to call the creative shots.

  39. I have always loved this series, but I don’t think I will be buying Fable 4 if it’s for Kinect and first person. Maybe I’ll buy a new laptop – just to play Fable 4 without first person and Kinect. But he should really look at some Fable forums.. I know how hard it is to change a video game of quality after years of work, I’ve been there, but if you have a game series, you should – and need – to look at what your target audience wants! Go back, make a prequel, start again, we can wait. But do not ruin the series! I’m liking the ideas of being able to get super-involved, but it won’t work. Fable has it’s reputation of being third person, intuitive and mature. Fable III slightly spoiled it. I want to see more Heroes Guild! I want to see more Maze and the Guildmaster! I don’t want you to go any further in time, eventually you will end up in the future and that won’t be the right thing to do. Fable lost it’s charm in Fable 3, don’t let us lose everything good about the series in Fable 4. Peter, please just listen to the audience. I know my ideas are rubbish, but a lot of people seem to want a prequel! I loved the characters, story and everything but Fable 3 is too repetetive, and Fable 4 will be less immersive and will stray away from Fable: TLC. I don’t want people to like my ideas, but I want something better than *this*.
You re-made Fable, Fable TLC was amazing. But so, so many things are unanswered! Ditch the graphics and Kinect design and focus on what *WE* want. It will take you a few months longer but if the game is better, it’s worth it! We can wait, but please please please get back to where the series all started. Don’t forget that many Fable gamers have been with you since the start and changing EVERYTHING will lose so many fans.

I hate first person games as you can’t see everything clearly enough. I love the improvements from 2 to 3 and was hoping that it would continue. Going by the interview it looks like the most of what you do is drive a caravan around. Did you know that being in a wheelchair means I can’t play kinetic at all, I need the controller.

  45. Ohhhh dear. Honestly, I love the Fable games (except the third one… It was rather bad) But as a fourth Fable game, I have to say, looks like shit, seems like shit, must be shit. Now, maybe, MAYBE, if you made this into its’ own series and separated it from Fable, it would be a decent game, but Fable just isn’t meant to be first person, and at least make the Kinnect optional. Fable is a free roam, adventuring, character customizing RPG game. Not a first person, unable to use a controller game. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS TO FABLE, PETER, PLEASE! MAKE IT ITS’ OWN SERIES, AND MAKE A FABLE THAT’S AS GOOD AS THE FIRST AND SECOND ONES, INSTEAD!

I have always loved the fable games, when i first got fable 2 (the first one i played) i fell in love with most everything about it, its because of me my friends and some of there friends got into fable. and i have gotten used to the over hypes sales for the games, im glad that there trying to reach for the stars. but if the moves from the third person game i loved to a first person game that i need the kinect to play i will not be-able to get it, nor would i want to. I dont have the space needed for the kinect and even if i did im not going to buy one just because the games are all heading that way trying to force me forward.

  49. This looks nothing like the Fable I know and love. First off, it’s first person. You shouldn’t give an RPG an entirely first person viewpoint. I guess this means you can’t customize your appearance, because it won’t matter how you look.

The Kinect is no fun at all. Besides, it usually doesn’t even work that great. Am I supposed to buy Kinect? I’d rather stick to my controller… if you would allow me to, that is.

It seems Molyneux is focusing more and more on people who haven’t ever played an RPG before. And now you’re trying to draw our attention away from the gameplay and story by adding even more jokes. Lose the not-so-funny humour and add some good gameplay!

Molyneux, you need to focus on the wants of consumers. Almost every successful business does so. I could go on about the boring spells and weapons, but I think we all know how lackluster Fable 3 (and 2, if only slightly) was.

    Comment by Leonard — July 9, 2011 @ 10:47 pm

  50. Ive played all the fable games in the series so far and i’m slowly getting less and less exited when a new game comes out. Options seem to be getting more dull and the line between good and evil is fading away. When horns and halos were took away the game for me lost a lot of interest. Fable is supposed to be about choises and how they reflect on the player, but most of that went away in Fable 3. Fable: The Journey should be an option to have alignment change the looks of the character and to have Kinect or a controller. So many fans are slipping away because were being force fed what they want us to like. When most people play a game they arent looking for a workout. I dont want to have to flail my arms around everytime I play something. If Lionhead tried they could pull off an amazing game but the way it’s going now… Fable’s lost

fable 4 is still on development

  52. To Mr Molyneaux:

As a huge Fable fan, I can honestly say that I will not buy a Kinect-only first-person Fable game. Although I found Fable 3 disappointing overall (with less content, less customisation & less diverse range of options during game play), I enjoyed the graphics & fantasy-steampunk meld and I was very interested to see where this could go in the next game.

I know a lot of people are suggesting a return to the Old Kingdom, but I guess I was hoping for an ingeniously designed game which somehow took Albion another step forward in time with more technological advances but retaining the traditions of a high-fantasy RPG game. Almost an alternative present. If done well, it could have been very interesting indeed. Unique.

However, no matter where in the Albion timeline you choose to place your future games you need to understand your market. Fans of Fable enjoy fantasy RPGs, and there are some fundamentals that every RPG needs to have…like the ability to explore the world, the option of engaging in combat using more than just magic (melee is a very popular fighting style in RPGs, you know!) and an involved storyline.

Finally, making gaming nerds like me flail their arms around wildly while trying to play what is essentially a first-person-shooter in a one dimensional pseudo-RPG is not cool.

  53. I agree completely. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like he’s trying to grab more fans, the ones already on kinect and wii, and not taking into consideration the fans that have been playing these games for a long time. We want something that gives us remnants of the past stories in Fable, something timeless, not something new and shiny.

  55. I have played all the Fables and in my opinion the first was the best hands down. the armor system, the bows and arrows, the way you used magic was so well done but still had room for improvement, but they just took it all away and gave us something alot more robotic in Fable 2, and Fable 3 made it to complicated to use. The magic use in the first one made it easy, fun, and interesting to combine spells and use them against your opponent (my favorite was using berserk, slow time and, double hit and overwhelm a golem) and they took out many fun spells and completely screwed up the magic use. The bows and arrows are just a preference issue for me but, I really like using them compared to the guns. The armor system was completely ruined they had a good thing going, get stronger get better armor, I might suggest a few more options and level of armor but it worked. and if you didnt want armor you could get other stuff as well like mage robes and ranger outfits thgat suited your character that still strengthened your character. Go back to your roots and you will get your fans back, I know ill buy the first copy if they do.

UNTIL…. i read 2 things 1ST PERSON and KINECT … 1) i hate 1st person view and 2) i work all day in a job where i have to walk and lift heavy objects. i play video games to relax … meaning sitting down with a controller in my hand not jumping around like an idiot. so basically if this game does not have options for controller and 3rd person i will not buy it .

I mean come on this is not a kinect type of game and you know it Peter Molyneux you should have kept it a controller based game and get back the armor system I have played fable 1 with my best friend and loved it I bought fable 2 and fable 3 they were ok
I hate how you have to have the time spell as a potion because that is my favorite spell get rid of 1st person also because the main thing that people love about fable is being able to see your character evolve I like the horse idea but no caravan just one horse that you can get on it and ride it around. you should make it so that you can keep that horse just outside a town in a stable which you have to pay a small fee to keep it in there until you buy the stable you should still have kept the dog because he was pretty cool you should have the option to turn off treasure finding though because it is annoying at times you should have keep the sanctuary because it is very useful. you should not have changed the shopping format in fable 3 because it is difficult to get everything you need to buy in the shop with the fable 3 format.

  64. Seriously. I totally lost my hopes for Fable.. Exited i was for Fable 3, once i played it, i was kinda disappointed! But no worries, I heard u saying u KNEW what u did wrong, and fixing it in fable 4. At the same time u were opening a suggestion website for all the fable fans, a lot of people gave some pretty good advise, with great suggestions to make the game even more interesting. Even for the new comers to the RPG games.

Well well Peter, i see u took the suggestions pretty serious! (NOT) Even with the tons of replies not to put Kinect into the game, u still choose to do so! I don’t think i will buy the next game, due to the horrible way of interacting/control. It’s not a smart move to force people into something like Kinect. I can imagine it’s not easy to keep every player satisfied, but i don’t think anyone is going to be happy with this.

Don’t change the way of Fable, like u are doing now. Take a good look at the first 2 games, and put some of it back! It’s not the “new” element people are worried bout. It’s a whole different game play! It’s probably to late for this game to be saved. Tho i hope for ur future games, u’ll think twice before making a crucial decision.

  71. I’ve watched the Fable series decline from the creation of Fable 2, and it’s sad! The “Lost Chapters” was the BEST installment since it had much added content and extra weapons, as well as keeping to the original; which we loved. This is what the fans want. More to do, more weapons to collect, less oww-my-finger-hurts-baby action. Just because some kid can’t beat a balverine because his thumbs are too fat does not mean you jack-up a perfectly working fight system. I like the idea of riding a horse from location to location (while it shortens your total trip time) but don’t like the Kinect idea at all. There’s no reason for me to throw out a shoulder in real life casting an invisible spell at the TV. And who said that the OLD spell casting ways (and spells) were no fun? The ones used in Fable 2 and 3 sucked rocks, besides the ability to cast 2 spells at once via the gauntlets in Fable 3. Why did I have to have a potion to utilize a spell? If I’m a hero, I should not need a potion like a mere mortal. It should continue as previously – earned via experience playing and fighting in Albion. I liked the fact of getting scarred only if I was knocked out but, being King was absolutely pointless. At the final battle of Fable 4, there should be a boss. A difficult boss that does not merely need a few swipes of a Katana or one shot from your Master Turret Pistol to defeat. During Fable 2, I shot dude in the head once while standing around the other hero’s and thought, “That’s it? No fighting us all? He’s just gonna fall over the edge and die? Not even a spell to deflect my bullet?” I got my Albion-Ass kicked by the the final boss dragon in Lost Chapters so often that it became fun. This is how a good RPG game should do you. Kick your butt until you feel an accomplishment when you finally defeat him. Not feeling like you spent $60 to have your best friend rob you. Get back to the basics, gentlemen. Give me my armor back!

  72. They seem to like dumbing the game down. the first game you had so many choices to spend your exp. points on and amazing will abilities ( Multi-arrow, Berserk, Enflame) as well as many weapon types (swords, axes, pickhammers, even a frying pan). In fable 2 they shortened the will ability list and combined some (fireball and enflame) and took out armor and long boss fights. And in fable 3 you had to wear special gloves to even use will powers. not much hero blood eh? oh and no trolls. What was with only using swords or hammers? did they stop inventing axes? with each game they make them more simplistic and boring. Pretty soon all you will do is poke the bad guy with a stick and tell him he is a bad man.

Fable 3 was ok just ok it did NOT live up to my expectations at all but i exepted it only because of my undying love of fable (1,2)…and now here we are this peice of shit called “The Journey” i only got kinect for dancing games like dance central and other multiplayer games for when my friends come over not for my favorite game of all time.Peter your getting old and senile and need to stop trying to think of new STUPID ideas and just read this thread and listen to your fans i mean you don’t have to listen to a word of this im just a kid studying to be a game designer myself but im also most likely Fable’s biggest fan so please don’t destroy this game…

I got bored with fable 3 really quickly- it was quite limited compared to number 2 and quite a bit less work went into it I would say. I saw the trailer for number 4 and it is obviously great technology  but, firstly, I would like to see the option to use a controller for the days I just want to chill on the couch and not work so hard. Secondly, this technology is probably gonna cost a lot more than I’m prepared to pay for it. Even though I am now a die-hard fable fan. Please take this into consideration

  85. I really am disappointed with Fable’s direction it is heading. The original had a boss ending with the choice of being evil or good being a major part of character development, with that slowly diminishing and Fable 2 not even having a boss ending the franchise I feel should be called something else entirely. Fable The Journey does have good graphics and the kinect is cool, but it still needs to have the option to detail your character, roam where you want to, have strong emphasis on being good or evil, have a decent selection of weapons and magic, and having the choice to use the controller or the kinect or both interchangeably. I could go on for days about Peter’s decision, but the new Fable does look good, but could use some serious tweeking. I hope any future Fable games are going to use the original first two Fable’s gaming dynamics or unfortunately Peter your going to lose me and millions of Fable fans. Also Fable needs to come out with a book and dice RPG. That would be neato.

  86. Fable 1 was amazing, and I loved every second of it.  Fable 2 was OK, some issues were fixed from Fable 1 but it still didn’t live up to the hype.  Fable 3 was a f*cking train wreck.  Absolutely terrible.  Everyone knows it.  People wanted to try and believe that the game had some redeeming qualities… But it just didn’t.  When I heard that Lionhead was “rushing” another Fable, to run on the Kinect, and is to be targeted towards younger audiences?… I was shocked.  It was hard for me to believe that a single developer could be that retarded.  Fable 1 is on my personal top 10 games list, and it hurts to see such a promising and potentially legendary IP treated like a dirty whore, and f*cked for every cent.

    Comment by THC420 — October 6, 2011 @ 2:25 pm

  92. Story, setting, gameplay, graphics, Fable has unique versions.

The Story in the First game was absolutely fantastic. Jack of Blades was a great Villain, you didn’t know anything about him, and there was only hints that he was even bad until you really met him, it was a hidden evil, and a hidden plot you uncovered along the way. then the twist with Maze. Fable 2’s story was very predictable, it was still pretty good, but you knew right away who the villain was, who your allies were, and what your goal was. Fable 3’s story was Okay, but the darkness was a disappointing, and took away from the industrial revolution aspect of the game. also, I feel that the revolution was less a revolution and more a coup d’etat since it was essentially using military force to remove one person from power, and put another one in, a revolution includes a complete paradigm shift along with a change of power.

Setting, The first game had a unique version of your typical medieval world with city states and their own governments mayors etc. rather than your typical kings knights and lords. Fable 2 defiantly had a cool late Renaissance, pre-industrial feel. Fable 3 had great potential in going into the industrial revolution, but it failed to really indulge like I hoped it would. The industrial revolution was mostly just in Bowerstone Industrial, and I was a bit disappointed at how the factories where made. I really wanted to indulge into the industrial revolution, fighting for the forgotten masses, but the Darkness, and the setting in general took away from that. I was hoping Fable 4 would go deeper into maybe even a steam punk setting.

I was hoping Fable would do the same thing Halo is trying to do, and go back to it’s roots. The original gameplay was easy, simplistic, and still fun. The gameplay wasn’t rail, it was turn by turn, it wasn’t first person, it wasn’t a button smasher, it was a damn good RPG. the player decided everything about the character, it was completely custom. The second game made it a little easier to deal with multiple opponents, but I didn’t like the magic so much, and I didn’t use it much in either the second or third, but it did make it easy to mix all three, will range, and melee in combat, and it made magic a little more effective attack wise.

The Graphics in the first was a very good use of bitmaping to compensate for the underwhelming level of polygons allowing it too still look good while remaining a relatively small files, and quick loads. Fable 2, and 3 had a little longer load times, but I didn’t mind much, since the graphics where pretty good, and the graphics for the cut scenes where fantastic. There has been a progressive decrease in effort in hair however, the first two, hair was pretty well done, but the third game, it wasn’t so great, and from what I’ve seen in the trailers for the fourth, the hair is even worse. Also something I noticed, was that Balvarines fur didn’t always render right away in the third game, making them look like poodles.

Fable is what turned me into an avid gamer, don’t ruin it. Motion controls are still rather novel in games, and not a good risk. I don’t have a lot of money, and I won’t risk my money on the chance this might be some crappy game. I would like to see fable 4 to go back to the original gameplay, I really like the way it works and wished more did that. I would also like for fable 4 to really indulge into the industrial world the third game didn’t while having a deep, well thought out story characteristic of the first game and one of the major reasons I fell in love with it. also, for god sakes, fix the hair, that really bugs me.

IF anything, there should be an option to play with either kinect or a controller. As great as gaming technology has come, you can never rule out the traditional way of playing, or else you are going to lose a large population of gamers to this method.

This installment of Fable looks incredible, so please don’t spoil it by only making it only available on kinect!

  101. I am really… disapointed. frankly their getting rid of the stuff i loved the game for. A) you could actually see your character
    B) it wasn’t first-player unless with ranged weapons
    C) you were more focused on your game the your horses’s ass (just saying…)
    D) I don’t want to half to buy a kinect (which costs more than my actual xbox) for one game.
    E) i love playing with the xbox controler. it makes me feel like im actually playing.
    F) i don’t like grabbing at air.
in conclusion, i think Fable 4 will lose alot of fans if they don’t make some improvements. it will lose alot of fans who like it for some of the features that its predecessors have.

Peter mate, I have been a fan of fable since my cousin bought fable on the original xbox at the age of 9 i’m now 13 but my cousin who had got me into the series had sadly become a paraplegic after a car crash and he was he was 16 then and had honestly lost the will to live, the only thing that he and i had truly enjoyed in our lives were the moments we shared playing fable, please i am begging you DO NOT make the Journey a kinect only game. I honestly can not bear to see my older cousins face when i am the only one who is able to play it to its full potential

    Thankyou :D

  103. If you have something and it ain’t broke..don’t fix it. Just ask bioware with their dragon age 2.

My advice, Peter…look at amazon’s star rating decline in your games. Get a clue, developers.

There are so few good RPG out there and now you are turning this one into a wii game.

For me personally,. 1st person view makes me motion sick so thanks alot. If you turn the next Fable game into that view only…you take away one of the few games I like.

    Shame.

  104. Again what they guy had said below, the third one sucked and unfortunately I had bought the limited edition version. If you think people will buy kinect just to play Fable 4 then you are mistaken. I will still buy Fable 4 even though it appears as if you have destroyed the franchise completely but only if I can PLAY IT WITH A REGULAR CONTROLLER as everyone wants. Fable 1 and 2 were legendary, too bad you had the audacity to neglect what the fans have said. Perhaps after this game turns into a complete failure by what you are showing then you will learn.

  105. I really got into gaming for the fable series, it was the reason I bought my own xbox instead of using a friends… I even liked 3 with the D&D references and snarky jokes, expect for the over-in-a-flash final battle… but the major appeal of these games (creating a character that you work hard to earn changes for such as clothing, hair, body type, powers etc, getting to watch that character explore and fight while you run around the world when and where you want to) is lost when a first person view is applied, and the enjoyment of playing after a long day of work [note: the folks who will be more likely to spend $ on your games and DLC] is sure to be lost with kinect controls.

Peter, please tell us this is just some sort of side project and that there will be a real fable 4, as you can see this one is surely not going to appeal to fable fans.

  106. Keep the graphics lose the kinect!!!!

The more time and effort you put into using the kinect your just going to keep losing fans. Just get rid of the kinect

  109. I Grew up in the gaming era, Atari, Nintendo, Sega, ect. played ALOT of games in my past, but when i seen that lionhead was comming out with a xbox game…..Fable…since i did play Black & White which was a rather impressive game read all about it, was hyped, so got it, and it was a great game, Got fable 1, and i was just amazed by this game, best rpg game i have EVER FUCKING PLAYED! was just amazing through and through, loved the styles, textures, adventures and just the pure length of the game and what you had to go through just to get to that climatic point, i can admit though i would of loved longer play and more quests but ehh, it did what it did. Fighting Jack, having to be disguised as a bandit and ivade there camp, whoopin on twin blades huge ass, and everything was great, even the HEALTH AND MANA BARS!!!!!!!!!!!!…..yeah….hated fable 3 but anyway continuing, having to either fight from afar with a Bow even some bad ass bows, “skorms bow” yea ;), or some awsome melee combat swords, maces, ect. loved it, the guns…just took it over the top, how about we drop the pathetic ass guns, a typical point and click tactic….Guns = Bitches, Bows = skill, “not in the game but you know” just the bow was amazing, all the different kinds, the crazy types of magics you could use, btw The summon spell….always loved havng a balverine…lol was epic xD, but no…you guys ruined, killed, disfigured fable by bring out games that just plain….lacked….everything that i loved about fable 1 im sure people can agree that every1 is like “oh blah blah every first game people fall in love with because it was the first, blah ect.” no thats not the point, the game was just amazing, and if they continued to aim high like they did with that game, the story line, the enemys, just everything fable 1 had to offer….every other fable would have been just fanfuckingtastic!, being a low level having to quest through darkwood….seemed VERY intense your like FUCK! wtf are those thngs!?! balverines of course at such a low level o.O. looking back at the game, it just had its moments of “oh shit am i going to die in here?” not like “oh…what do you know….more cheep knock off enemys that look like they might put up a fight….yay” even the hobbes in that game were just….creepy and nasty little guys that beat on your face if you let them, (fable 2 and 3) they seemed to do more “dancing” around you rather then attacking, the balverines were just pale in what they were in fable 1, lets get to the point, fable 2, fable 3 sucked complete ass….i really REALLY wish i never even picked up those games, id rather not even classify them as a Fable game. Point is, get your shit together lionhead, wtf have you been doing? id love to be a developer, a thinker, a do’er in game design, but yet we have pathetic individuals who makes cheep knock off games of the previous, more bad ass ones. I could make a better fable then you could just by using what i know from fable 1 and knowing definitely what NOT to do in the next one. Point is, just make Fable 1 again, Lost chapters was fucking epic…..dont get me started, how about just plain ol “Fable” for the next game, no 1, 2, 3. just a game to end it all, the longest game you could possibly make, that Starts you off in the Old kingdom (Fable 1) and continues, No guns please -.- those are idk they tend to ruin games for me and im sure alot of people when your used to seeing a bad ass Bow….

  110. BOO! I hope they make it to where it’s not JUST kinect. Bleh!

  111. I love fable and I love the freedom to build and make the game your own. Which I hope the new fable will still provide. But I would also like to virtually inter act with the game and get off my fat nerdy ass and lose some weight. I think sitting for too long is very bad for me and unhealthy but I LOVE RPG’s. So for me and most guys like thin women I LOVE the idea to get active and feel inside the game. Yes it should have a controller option for ppl who don’t want to use kinects or if you get tired… but I think so far most Kinect games suck and I have been waiting a long time for something like this to come out. Personally I hate feeling like I’m lazy.. I need this!

  112. Not Fable 4, this is a side game not one of the main games. Or technically you could say Fable Heroes is Fable 4 or Fable Pub Games was Fable 2. Learn the truth before classing things as they are.
