Writer, director, producer, game-maker, and all-around ultra-busy dude, Guillermo del Toro has a lot going on. And by “a lot” we mean A-freakin’-LOT.
Adding to the pile of things he has/wants to do, it’s being reported that del Toro is now set up to direct Beauty, a retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast, for Warner Brothers.
The period film already has a star attached in Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the juggernaut Harry Potter franchise, and a writer in Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Three Musketeers [2011]).
The project has been in the works since last spring with del Toro developing it with producers, initially as an adaptation of the book Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of the Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley, and has since evolved into its own retelling of the beloved fairy tale.
As we’ve come to learn, del Toro becomes attached to many projects he doesn’t ultimately end up directing, which is quite depressing. He’s currently filming Pacific Rim after failed attempts at The Hobbit, At the Mountains of Madness, and others. Nevertheless, this is yet another project made exciting by the thought of the director’s unique style…we can only hope that he does in fact end up making it.
