Independence Day

If you stayed at home and watched TV during the 4th of July, there’s no doubt that you probably came across Roland Emmerich’s holiday sci-fi actioner Independence Day. Rumors of a sequel have always lingered but any news to update us on the subject has been scarce. While Dean Devlin (Flyboys, The Patriot) and Emmerich have been working on a script for the sequel for some time, they haven’t been officially greenlight for production.

So while anxious fans await the day the sequel begins filming, Delvin spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to address the status of the film and how long it would take to get the Independence Day sequel into production.

Here’s the quote:

I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we’re every excited about the idea of doing it…. Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that’s gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go.

Not probably a surprise that they liked what they have put together – if they hadn’t this would be a very different report. But since he thinks he scripted something that’s worth seeing as a sequel to Independence Day, we can only hope that this means they will be turning in a script soon and that it will be green lit.

No doubt the aliens will come back with a taste for revenge, after all, one of their motherships has been destroyed. So it’s only fair that the humans feel the full force of their alien rage. But based on Devlin’s quote, we could be seeing much more than aliens vs. humans. Will the humans have to take the fight to the alien world, or will the aliens bring more than on mothership to Earth? Like I said, I really hope there is much more to it than that.

We will have to see if audiences truly want to see a sequel when Fox re-releases Independence Day in 3D on July 3, 2013.
