Ghostbusters

This endless “will Bill Murray be in Ghostbusters 3” tug-of-war was bound to end sooner or later. Just be glad that it is ending sooner and not later, because today may be the day that we hear the last of this kind of news.

Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that Billy Murray will not reprise his role as Peter Venkman in the third Ghostbusters film.

Murray has been teetering back and forth on reprising his role as Venkman, but he’s always leaned towards not coming back. Let’s just hope that this will be the last we hear of this.

Aykroyd also confirmed that there is a new writer on board to pen the script for Ghostbusters 3. The film will reportedly follow the older Ghostbusters handing off the torch to a new generation of Ghostbusters.

Here’s the exact quote:

Yes, we’ve got a brilliant new writer on it and we’ll be passing the torch on to a new generation. We’re working on it to make it just right to satisfy our fans. I’m confident we’ll be in production in the next year.

Men in Black 3 scribe Etan Cohen is the “brilliant new writer” that Aykroyd is talking about, and he will be polishing a script that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have drafted. Whether or not production will begin next year remains to be seen.

The news was confirmed in an interview between Aykroyd and Metro.

So will you watch knowing that Murray will not be a part of Ghostbusters 3?

  1. Yes, yes I will see it.

I think Bill believes he’s out of touch with today’s market, when in reality its matter of the right kind of writer to make a role fitting for him.

Part of that is the lost art of comedy that no longer graces the big screen.

I really wish Bill put more faith in Dan to get a production together that would give Murray the best send off from the series.

  2. Movie going public has changed, 30 years ago you could make a movie that was mostly dialog, now if things don’t go boom every 30 sec or so everyone falls asleep.

Bill is just part of the older crew of comics who are going out of style.

  3. I *LOVE* Ghostbusters and want nothing more than to see Bill Murray reprise his role one last time (as the team passes the torch to a new generation) but if he’s not enthusiastic about it or willing to dive in and give it his all, despite how out of touch he may or may not be with todays market, then the Ghostbusters are better off without him. If Peter Venkman returns, it needs to be an all or nothing proposition and I wouldn’t want to see Bill Murray giving any less than 100%. That said, I’ll see the movie whether he’s in it or not! Dan Aykroyd really seems to want this and I’m putting my faith in him (and the rest of the crew) to deliver in a big way. I loved the 1st, liked the 2nd and thoroughly enjoyed the Xbox360 game! Whatever they come up with, it can’t possibly be worse than the bastardization of all my other childhood favorites (Transformers, G.I. JOE, now I hear “M.A.S.K.”?). Needs to be 3D though. Want to see proton streams, Slimer and his pals in 3-friggin-D!!
