Judas Priest Early Band Photo

In honor of the 40th anniversary this past week of Judas Priest‘s debut album Rocka Rolla, this Massive Metal Monday is a song from that landmark release. Here are the metal gods themselves with “Never Satisfied.”

Watch the band performing “Never Satisfied” live here below.

When I was growing up in rural Indiana in the early ’80s, there was very limited access to heavy music. These were the days before MTV blew up with the whole hair metal, Headbangers Ball phenomenon. But on Sunday nights, there was a two-hour radio show that came from WOXY, the radio station of Miami University of Ohio, just across the state line in Oxford, Ohio. It was called Massive Metal for the Masses and I would wait all week for it to air. It was through this show that I was introduced to bands like Venom, Bathory, WASP, Michael Schenker Group, Slayer, and countless others. This Monday weekly column is my tip of the hat to that show. I call it Massive Metal Monday. Every week, I will pay tribute to defining moments by the artists that laid the groundwork for heavy metal to become the worldwide cultural bond for all of us metal heads.

  1. Where did you grow up?! I grew up in SE Indiana, about 30 minutes from Oxford. I used to listen to WOXY all the time! I can remember Massive Metal! Didn’t they play Dr. Demento before that? Or maybe after? My memory is fuzzy.

  2. I’m originally from Connersville, Indiana. Left there in 1989. Still have some family there. Yes, I believe Demento may have been on afterward. Where are you from?

  3. Wow. Small flippin’ world! I grew up in both Connersville and Brookville. Graduated from Brookville in ’89 and still live in the area. Your article really brought back memories of listening to WOXY on Sunday nights, cassette tape in the radio ready to record from both Massive Metal and Demento. Trips to Looney T-Birds to buy those albums (well, cassettes). Good times! Thanks for the memories man!
