The Expanse

As Syfy continues to get back to a place where they’re not known for just bad movies and wrestling, while still running bad movies and wrestling, they are starting to produce more quality original programming. Part of that plan is a series based on The Expanse series of novels by James S.A. Corey (the combined pen name of writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). The first trailer has now been released for the television series, and it’s looking pretty good.

Check out the trailer below and let us know if this gets you excited for the series. If you’ve read the book, do you think they’ve captured the spirit of the novel? Be sure to keep a look out as we get closer to the series official release date.

The Expanse is set a future where mankind has colonized the solar system, leading to new factions, with the main groups being the Earth government, the upstart non-Earth colonies, and the denizens of the asteroid belt mining colonies. Jim Holden and the crew of The Rocinante become caught in the middle of an escalating arms race between Earth and the colonies, which leads them into a lot of danger and a discovery that will change humanity forever. Meanwhile, a detective on one of the mining colonies becomes embroiled in an investigation that puts him on much the same path as the Rocinante.

The Expanse TV series is written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man), and stars Thomas Jane (The Punisher) as Detective Miller and Steven Strait (Magic City) as Jim Holden. It is set to air later this year.

I’ve read the book and it is an excellent hard science fiction story and I can’t wait to see how they show the space travel that is depicted in the novel. There’s no giant robots, but there’s a fair amount of Gundam in the story’s DNA.

You can learn more about the show over at Syfy.

  4. I’m VERY disappointed at the “look” of this. The books are very explicit that what’s out in the expanse is very dirty, gritty, worn out and “old” tech pieced together and constantly patched because it’s always breaking down.

This makes everything look new and shiny and state of the art.
