The two times that The Joker has appeared on film, we got two different stylistic approaches. So when we see him a third time in Suicide Squad, we’ll most likely see one that is unlike the other two.
Jared Leto will play the third incarnation of the Batman villain in David Ayer‘s film. We’ve seen the transformative process that the actor has undergone to become The Joker through social media, but all of those teases come short of the full reveal.
Now, a new report says that Leto’s Joker might actually be based on the character from Frank Miller‘s The Dark Knight Returns. Hit the jump for more.
The report comes from none other than El Mayimbe from Latino Review, who posted the news on his Instagram feed:
Today’s #SUICIDESQUAD FIRE is all about Jared Leto’s THE JOKER! So what I’m being told, Leto’s Joker is most definitely based on THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS version. He’s lean & scarred but his suit does have broad shoulders. Joker works out in his cell like an inmate when he is interrogated by Amanda Waller. He’s doing hand stand push ups so it makes sense that Jared Leto said he is putting on weight. He’s definitely not skinny, but in fact more muscular. He has bleached skin not make up. #SPOILER – He’s killed one of Batman’s sidekicks, there is a lot of references to his past crimes. He kills a lot of people. HUGE #RUMOR – I’m also told The Joker has a lot of scenes with HUGO STRANGE! He’s the psychiatrist at the prison & seems to be a part of the story yet I heard nothing of casting or mention of a single casting choice. Hugo Strange has quite a few interactions with the Joker & Harley Quinn. It’s not the regular security. It’s internal one on one thing. #THEJOKER #THEDARKKNIGHTRETURNS #JAREDLETO #HUGOSTRANGE #AMANDAWALLER #HARLEYQUINN #DC #DCCU #DCCOMICS #SCOOP #FIRE #BOOM
The report does fall in line with previous rumors that the Joker will be covered in scars due to previous battles with the Batman. Then there is the physicality aspect. Leto is putting on some extra weight to mirror the character’s physique, and apparently we’ll be seeing some of that while he works out in his cell while being interrogated by Amanda Waller.
This would be the first time that a cinematic Joker has appeared outside of a Batman film – unless there is a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So it should be exciting to see what the reaction will be like to not seeing the Joker and Batman in the same room.
Leto recently traded in his longtime long auburn locks, which he sported as recently as last month for the Oscars, for a short blond do with matching eyebrows, as a few days ago during Paris Fashion Week.
