A new futuristic take on the story of Zorro titled Zorro Reborn has been in the works for many years now, with Y Tu Mamá También, Amores Perros, and The Motorcycle Diaries star Gael Garcia Bernal once attached to star in the movie for 20th Century Fox. Other names that were mentioned as potential writers and directors as they tried to make the movie happen include Bryan Singer, Ricardo de Montreuil, Gary Whitta, and Justin Marks. But in the end, it never happened.
Now the movie is no longer set up at Fox, but it is ready to make another run at becoming a reality. It’s being reported that Zorro Reborn is now set up at Lantica Media, and it is interestingly described as a “post-apocalyptic take on the myth” that’s set in the near future but still maintains the whole mysterious stranger wearing a mask and cape working against oppressors in the best interest of the less fortunate. Whether this is the same “futuristic” idea that’s been planned all along or if the post-apocalyptic twist is a new spin on it is unclear at the moment.
Lantica CEO Antonio Gennari said this of the announcement:
“Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we’re proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation.”
With Sobini Films CEO and producer Mark Amin adding:
“This has been a fifteen year journey filled with ups and downs but it has remained my passion project over the years.”
Now the attention turns to finding the right director for the project. The current goal is to start filming in March of next year at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios.
If it were you developing Zorro Reborn, who would be your top pick to direct a near future post-apocalyptic take on the tale, and who would you like to see play Zorro?
