The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “The Penguin!” Henchman 21 and “Fish Mooney!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of November 12, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Let’s just get into this thing because we’ve got comic for you to read and you’ve got comics to buy. Here’s a bunch of stuff you should check out this week. It’s what we do here on The GoD List!

Henchman 21

The Kitchen Cover by Becky Cloonan

The Kitchen #1 (Vertigo Comics – $2.99) No, The Kitchen from Vertigo Comics is sadly not a cooking comic, which is about the only thing that would make me more excited. Sue me, I like cooking comics. No, The Kitchen is a mob story, set in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen during the late ’70s. The series is about the wives of three Irish gangsters who decide to take over the business when their husbands are sent to prison. At this point the only way I could be more interested was if it was in fact a cooking comic. The Kitchen comes to us from writer Ollie Masters, and I’ve never read anything by him, so we’ll see how that goes, but it’s got art by Ming Doyle and Jordie Bellaire, and I loved that teams work on Mara from Image, so I’m confident in the art team. The premise alone is enough for me to give The Kitchen a shot, so check this out if you’re a fan of gangster stories, or New York stories, or tough ladies.

Zenith: Phase One (Rebellion – $25.00) Zenith: Phase One is a collection of some of Grant Morrison’s early work in Great Britain, and this is all stuff that has been hard to find in the US for a while, so I’m sure there are a whole batch of Morrison-philes excited to read this. In doing some research on this, it looks like the rights for Zenith may be a little sketchy, and I can’t 100% say if Morrison or artist Steve Yeowell is cool with this release, so you may want to do a little checking into this before making your purchase. If you do pick it up, you’ll find a story about British super-hero Zenith, a second generation hero who uses his powers to promote his music career. It features a lot of that early Morrison energy found on books like Doom Patrol and shows off his ever-present love of super-heroes. This is a new chance for many American readers to discover this portion of Morrison’s catalog, but you might feel bad buying it.

Django/Zorro #1 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) Yes, it’s the Django Unchained/Zorro crossover that everyone was clamoring for. I have no idea what this will be like, but it’s just crazy enough to work. And I like crazy.

All-New Captain America (Marvel Comics – $3.99) – Here it is, the start of Sam Wilson’s time as Captain America, taking over for an aged Steve Rogers who can’t do the job anymore. Call it a stunt if you want, I just call it the next part of the story that writer Rick Remender is telling and I want to see where this is going. Sam Wilson is kind of an inspired choice to replace Cap, largely because he’s got his own shtick with the flying and the falcon sidekick and what-not and they seem to be adding Cap’s shield on top of that and I kind of just want to see him fighting stuff. And when you’ve got Stuart Immonen, the best super-hero artist working today, on the book, you can expect that action to be clear and exciting and just what you want out of a Captain America comic. We got some pretty good comics the last time there was a replacement Cap, I think we’ll be just fine with this new one.
