King Kong Movie Skull Island from Legendary Pictures

It is only a matter of weeks before Legendary’s King Kong-prequel Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, starts to film, but not before a final script is turned in. This isn’t anything new, as scripts are constantly being rewritten in order to perfect the narrative, and now Universal is doing an in-house hire before the script can be finalized. According to a new report, Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly has been tapped to polish the script.

More on the story below.

THR was the first to report on the news. According to them, Connelly will only be doing some last-minute work on the script, as the film is still in the casting phase preparing for an October start date in Hawaii. Other filming locations include Iceland and Vietnam.

Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) also stars in the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed project. Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly, and Tom Wilkinson are in talks for other roles as well. According to a previous report Jackson is in talks to play a role previously filled by J.K. Simmons, with Reilly acting as Michael Keaton’s replacement. No word yet on Wilkinson’s role in the film.

The film was first announced back in 2014 during Comic-Con, and it was revealed that it wouldn’t be a tradition retelling of the King Kong story but rather a film that sees a team of explorers venture into the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of the king of the apes. However, what drew these explorers to even entertain the idea of setting foot onto ominous Skull Island, home of the eponymous King Kong is unknown. In fact, plot details are being kept under tight wraps, and we won’t get a hint of what the film will be about until later on.

Previous writers who worked on the script also include Max Borenstein (Godzilla), John Gatins (Flight), and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler).

Connolly also wrote Jurassic World and newly confirmed Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow’s Sundance Film Festival darling Safety Not Guaranteed. He also wrote Paramount’s Monster Trucks. He will reunite with Trevorrow once more for the sci-fi romance film Intelligent Life.

Kong: Skull Island is scheduled to open in theaters on March 17, 2017.
