As expected, Dean Israelite has gone with relative unknowns to play the titluar heroes in Power Rangers. We saw a glimpse of who Israelite was looking at when they started testing for the roles of the five teenagers earlier this month. However, the only one to be confirmed from those testings so far is Naomi Scott (The Martian, The 33). Newcomer, Dacre Montgomery was also announced earlier this month as Jason the Red Ranger.
Now two more actors will be receiving their power coins and morphers. The official Power Rangers Twitter account confirmed that Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt, Netflix’s Marco Polo) and Me and Earl And The Dying Girl star RJ Cyler will be joining the cast. Find out who they will be playing below.
Lin will be playing the Black Ranger, while Cyler will be the Blue Ranger. Here’s the confirmation per Twitter,
And just in case you missed it earlier this month, here are the confirmations for Scott and Montgomery:
For most (maybe you can even make an argument for all) of these actors, Power Rangers will be one of their first high-profile roles. The only role that remains to be cast is Trini, the Yellow Ranger. A few months back, a release of the character descriptions revealed that the cinematic iterations weren’t too far off from their TV counterparts. But it looks like there won’t be any more casting race in accordance to the Power Ranger colors.
While it has been over 18 years since the release of the last Power Rangers film, there is no one questioning its life expectancy, though its popularity has diminished despite that the franchise is heading into its 22nd season.
Written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class), Power Rangers is due out in theaters for a January 13, 2017 release. It is produced by Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, and Allison Shearmur.
