Knives Out

Knives Out
Director: Rian Johnson
Writer: Rian Johnson
Cast: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Christopher Plummer
Distributor: Lionsgate
Rated PG-13 | Minutes: 130
Release Date: November 27, 2019

Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out is a deliciously twisted whodunit murder mystery in the same vein of an Agatha Christie novel, but with a modern touch. Though it does rely on many of those Christie tropes of a detective warning the audience about foul play, marking everyone as a suspect, and deliberately setting up all of the clues in plain sight. And true to form, though the film holds the audience’s attention by giving them a well-crafted intrigue that is set up by Johnson, the political subtext allows it to be much more than just a simple murder mystery. And it is able to stay constantly entertaining as it is full of unlikeable and very suspect characters, who are wonderfully played by an all-star cast, that not only keeps things funny, but will also have us guessing until the very end. Midsommar

Midsommar
Blu-ray | DVD | Digital
Director: Ari Aster
Writer: Ari Aster
Cast: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Archie Madekwe, Ellora Torchia, Will Poulter
Distributor: Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: October 8, 2019

If there was a movie that could epitomize living through a great tragedy while being in a toxic relationship, it would have to be Ari Aster‘s ambitious film Midsommar. An unconventional horror to say the least, the film is a slow burn that scares you at just the right moments, and then hits you even harder when you least expect it. Though that slow burn pacing may backfire, there is more than enough from Aster’s deft hand direction and star Florence Pugh’s performance to grab the audience’s attention and never let go. My full Blu-ray review of Midsommar here below.

A big part of what makes the John Wick franchise so popular is its mythology. It’s an action-packed trilogy that sees a secret world of assassins living amongst the populous. The fight choreography is splendid, with each fight and gun battle looking more like a beautiful stylized dance. It is the perfect way to showcase stunt work and highlight how vital stunt people are to a film like this one.

Now, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum gets its home release on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. Check out my review of the film and all of its bonus features here below.
