Jack Black returns to voice the lovable martial arts panda oaf Po in Kung Fu Panda 3. It has been nearly five years since the last installment, where the title character helped stop an invasion of China, and the audience learned that he was not the last of his kind. Now we are getting a glimpse of what a father and son reunion will look like kung fu panda style in an all new trailer for the film.
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Trumbo) will voice Po’s father, while J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, The Spider-Man Trilogy) will voice the nefarious Kai. Check out the full trailer below.
Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Lucy Liu, and Jackie Chan all return to reprise their voice roles as Tigress, Mantis, Crane, Mantis, and Monkey, respectively. In addition to Cranston and Simmons joining the cast, Kate Hudson (who replaced Rebel Wilson) also joins the cast as Pei Pei, a love interest to Poe. Because Hudson replaced Wilson, the animators had to go back to reanimate her scenes to reflect Hudson’s mannerisms, gestures, and personality.
So the trailer tells us that Kai (Simmons) is plotting revenge on those who were close to Master Oogay (the mystical turtle voiced by Randell Duk Kim who chose Po as the one who would fulfill a prophecy in the first film), and vows to destroy the last remaining panda village. Po, who is on his way to becoming a teacher, reunites with his father, and journeys with him to the hidden village, where he will teach them the ways of Kung Fu to help defend themselves against the chatty Kai and his army of jade warriors.
It goes without saying that Black seems very comfortable as Po, and it’s just funny to see that he still can get on Master Shifu’s (Dustin Hoffman) nerves, in a very adorable and endearing way. Plus watching Po try to teach kung fu to the village as his fellow pandas stumble and fall onto each other after throwing a simple practice punch is quite hilarious. Even Po admits that it isn’t going to be easy. Be sure to check out the first trailer just in case you missed it.
When Po’s long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible””learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas!
Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, Kung Fu Panda 3 hits theaters on January 29th, 2016.
