Jumanji: The Next Level

Whenever a success like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle comes along, you can be sure studio execs will greenlight a sequel almost immediately. Now fans can get another chance to jump back into the game with Jumanji: The Next Level, which Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for. The sequel brings the gang (Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner) back together again when they are forced to enter the game in order to save one of their own. However, this comes with a few complications as some of them are not the avatars they played as when they played the first time.

Now with these new challenges, and some geriatric help, the gang will go on an all new adventure that will take them to unseen locations, meet all new characters, and face greater dangers. Check out the trailer below.

Turner returns as Martha, the formerly shy and cynical intellectual, who gets high school jock Spencer (Blain) and popular girl and Bethany (Iseman) to join her to go back into the Jumanji video game cartridge in order to save their missing friend Spencer (Wolff). However, things aren’t quite the same when the game mismatches some of the players and the avatars they played as originally (Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black). To make things even more complicated, Danny DeVito and Danny Glover also get sucked into the game and now are playing as the Dr. Smolder Bravestone and Franklin “Mouse” Finbar avatars.

With Martha the only one who was properly matched with her Ruby Roundhouse avatar, she must lead the team into parts unknown so that they can save their missing friend and escape the world’s most dangerous game.

I guess the avatar mishaps is a nice way of keeping the franchise fresh. It may not be the most innovative thing, but at least we can have fun with Johnson and Hart trying to do their best impersonations of DeVito and Glover. But why waste some of the best gags in this trailer. Let’s just hope that director Jake Kasdan and writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have saved the more hilarious comedic bits for the actual film.

Here is the synopsis:

In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

The film also stars Nick Jonas, Rhys Darby, and Awkwafina.

Jumanji: The Next Level swings into theaters on December 13, 2019.
