Back in July it was reported that One Direction member and Dunkirk star Harry Styles was being considered for the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action take on The Little Mermaid. But ultimately Styles decided to pass up the role in order to focus on his music.
Now, with the rest of the cast already set, Disney has finally chosen an actor to play Prince Eric. According to reports, Jonah Hauer-King has landed the role.
Hauer-King is known for starring in this year’s A Dog’s Way Home. Other credits include Ashes in the Snow, the TV series World on Fire, and the 2017 Little Women and Howard’s End miniseries.
The actor joins Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Javier Bardem on the cast.
Bailey leads the cast as the title character, the mermaid with dreams of becoming human, Ariel. McCarthy, Awkwafina, and Tremblay will be playing Ursula, Scuttle, and Flounder, while Diggs is set to play Sebastian the crab. Ariel’s father, King Triton, will be played by Bardem.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is helming the movie, from a screenplay written by Jane Goldman and David Magee. It’s a remake of Disney’s 1989 animated classic of the same name, which was based on the Hans Christian Andersen story first published in 1837.
No release date for The Little Mermaid has been announced yet, but production is expected to begin in early 2020.
