‘Jurassic World’ Confirmed As A Trilogy

Chris Pratt in Jurassic World

With Jurassic World being the top grossing movie this year, Universal Pictures announcing that a sequel would follow did not come as a surprise. We know that film star Chris Pratt is already signed on for multiple films, as is Bryce Dallas Howard. However, Colin Trevorrow is unlikely to return considering he is busy directing Book of Henry, and will move on to directing Star Wars: Episode IX right after. But the filmmaker did talk about how the sequel would expand on the idea of weaponizing dinosaurs for military purposes.

While the sequel is continuing to be developed, it seems that we will be getting more than just one Jurassic World sequel, in fact we will be getting a trilogy. More on the story below.

The confirmation came from Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley, who sat down with other high ranking Hollywood executives at a roundtable hosted by THR. Here’s what she had to say about keeping Universal’s box office momentum going and if she is worried about meeting Jurassic World 2‘s release date.

“There’s no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He’s been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.”

While it is still very early in development, Jurassic World 2 is still without a director. As aforementioned, Trevorrow will be plenty busy in the upcoming years directing a few films, but he will be attached as an executive producer, consulting with Spielberg on how to expand the world of Jurassic World. Here’s what he had to say about not coming back for a sequel:

“This is something that Steven and I agreed to a long time ago, and I mentioned, actually, that in our very first meeting that it was important for me to tell different kinds of stories, and to be able to earn whatever street cred I have or will have as a filmmaker by making different kinds of films, and existing and living in different kinds of worlds. But that doesn’t mean I am not going to be involved. I do think, and this is just my honest answer, that this franchise that would be one that is best served more under the model with what Mission: Impossible has done with different directors bringing in new visions to something, that is in danger of something that has become repetitive. And this is just really me more acting as the custodians of this now to make sure that this continues on to be fresh and vital.”

There are a number of directors that Universal could go with. And now with a growing trend of studios hiring indie filmmakers to helm their tentpole films, it is likely that Universal could repeat that process by going with a lesser known director. We’ll just have to wait and see if they decide to do that or get someone with a more familiar name.

Jurassic World 2 (title subject to inevitable change) will arrive in theaters on June 22, 2018.
