The first trailer for Nine Lives has just arrived. The comedy stars Kevin Spacey as Tom Brand, an outlandish billionaire workaholic who is disconnected from his family. He attempts to make his adorable daughter happy by giving her the one thing he hates the most: a cat. Before Tom can give his gift to his daughter, he gets into an accident, and when he awakens, he discovers that his consciousness is trapped inside a cat.
It sounds too crazy to be true, but it is an actual film from Men In Black director Barry Sonnenfeld. In fact, we reported on the news almost a year ago, and now we are getting our first look at Nine Lives, which Sonnenfeld describes as a “funny, emotional, commercial comedy.” Check out the first trailer below.
At first, the thought of Spacey as a cat sounded so crazy that it did generate some mild interest. After all the House Of Cards actor is very versatile and doesn’t limit himself to Oscar-winning roles. But after looking at this trailer, Nine Lives doesn’t seem like it lives up to expectations. That or it’s not what I thought it would be.
That being said, I could see this playing relatively well with families. There’s plenty of cat antics to go around. Though some of the dialogue may be a bit too dark for younger members of the audience.
Thanks to JoBlo for the trailer. You can watch it in HD over at Apple Trailers.
Also starring Jennifer Garner, Malina Weissman, Cheryl Hines, Christopher Walken, and Robbie Amell, Nine Lives is scheduled for an August 5, 2016 release.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) is a daredevil billionaire at the top of his game. His eponymous company FireBrand is nearing completion on its greatest achievement to date – the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere. But Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has disconnected him from his family, particularly his beautiful wife Lara (Jennifer Garner) and his adoring daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman).
Rebecca’s 11th birthday is here, and she wants the gift she wants every year, a cat. Tom hates cats, but he is without a gift and time is running out. His GPS directs him to a mystical pet store brimming with odd and exotic cats- where the store’s eccentric owner- Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), presents him with a majestic tomcat, named Mr. Fuzzypants.
En route to his daughter’s party, Tom has a terrible accident. When he regains consciousness he discovers that somehow, he has become trapped inside the body of the cat. Adopted by his own family, he begins to experience what life is truly like for the family pet, and as a cat, Tom begins to see his family and his life through a new and unexpected perspective. Meanwhile, his family adjusts to life with an odd and stubborn cat, and his son David (Robbie Amell), steps up in ways Tom never expected.
If any hope exists of returning to his family as the husband and father they deserve, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence.
