Honest Trailer Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

In full disclosure, I hated this movie. Most of my friends loved it, and it is often a topic of divisive conversation. That being said, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has gained a fairly huge cult following since its 2010 release, and this week it gets the Honest Trailer treatment from the gang at Screen Junkies. I had several issues with the film, and number one is Michael Cera. I’ll put it delicately. I’m not a fan of his work. He has essentially played the same character with the same traits in nearly every one of his films, so much so that This is the End did a hilarious riff on him as a drugged out version of himself, obsessed with excess so much that as he dies on screen he pines for his cell phone. Number two, I felt like I was watching a movie with ADD… first it was teenage rom com, then a music video, then a video game… and I quickly stopped caring. But my biggest issue is something that narrator Jon Bailey picks up on… so let’s get to it!

Check out the Honest Trailer below.

“In a movie filled so many awesome fight sequences and hilarious visual comedy, that you’ll barely notice that every person in it is a terrible garbage person!” HA… YES! That’s what I hated most; Scott Pilgrim (Cera) is the least likable “hero” ever, and I couldn’t care about his mission to defeat the evil ex-boyfriends of the “love of his life,” if I wanted him to die in every battle. So revel in the late 2000s hipster cliches, and watch nerd fantasies come true, as the least manly looking man on earth spends two hours making out with hot girls and doing super cool special effects fight scenes.

Bailey calls it the total definition of style over substance, but is all in for complimenting Edgar Wright’s style, combining 8-bit video game animation into live action, and does near perfect images from the comic (to be fair, if you loved the comic, you’ll love this movie). Bailey also comments on the ending, finishing with a line that made me feel old because I agree, “I don’t get young people.”

Starring: Ready Player One, Manic Pixel Dream Girl, Hipster Kilgrave (HAHA, it’s funny if you watched Jessica Jones), and #notyourasiansidekick… New Title: Street Whiner 2: Turbo (in real Street Fighter graphics).

Screen Junkies currently has over 5 million subscribers on YouTube and releases a new Honest Trailer every Tuesday.
