Despite the mounting issues that Warner Bros.’ DCEU has, there are still many other projects to look forward to. Aside from the typical Wonder Woman, The Flash, Justice League, and standalone Batman film, there is also the long-gestating Justice League Dark. Yes, that project is still very much alive, and after spending some time in the development process the studio has found its director in Doug Liman.

If that sounds a bit strange to you, it is because it is. Liman was the director for Gambit, but given that film’s troubled production history, the Edge of Tomorrow director has moved on over to work on this dark supernatural DCEU film. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms Liman will no longer be directing the standalone Gambit film starring Channing Tatum as the title character.

While this project was under development, it was being set up as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro. Given the project’s tone and characters, it certainly wouldn’t be out of his wheelhouse to have directed something like this. However, that all fell through, and del Toro is no longer involved with the project. Scott Rudin is now a producer.

Characters that will be a part of this “supernatural adventure” film will include John Constantine (who was the title character of a solo 2005 movie that starred Keanu Reeves, and got his own short-lived TV series of the same name on NBC), Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna, and Swamp Thing (who had his own cult film in 1982).

With Liman climbing on board to direct Justice League Dark, it means that the film will see a change in that tone. No word in how much of that will change. Liman is better known for his action films like The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and most recently the critically acclaimed Edge of Tomorrow, under the WB banner.

Liman reunites with his Edge of Tomorrow actor Tom Cruise for American Made (formerly Mena), a film that centers on the true story of pilot Barry Seal, who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel in the 1980s. His next project, The Wall, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, will be distributed by Amazon Studios.

While there is no release date scheduled, WB has already reserved the release dates for October 5, 2018, and November 1, 2019. Perfect timing if you want to release something with a supernatural tone to it. We’ll keep you up to date on the progress of this project.
