The heroes for the new incarnation of Power Rangers are relative unknowns, while the villains and supporting roles have gone to more recognizable names like Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston. This was the plan going into the movie from the very beginning, and it looks like they are following through as the latest casting gets yet another famous comedian to join the ranks of the Rangers. Bill Hader will now be the voice of Alpha 5, the bumbling robot with a heart of gold who often assists Zordon, who is otherwise trapped in a time wrap, by giving the Power Rangers the tools they need to save the day.
More on the story below.
Here’s the post of the news from Power Rangers official Twitter account…
While some people claim that reboots “destroy” their childhoods, the casting of Power Rangers has proven to be nothing short of perfection. Now it remains to be seen what kind of role Alpha 5 will have in the film. As we have seen, there will be changes not only to the looks and costumes, but the zords as well. Maybe Zordon won’t even be in a time warp, but I can’t imagine seeing Alpha-5 not being a brightly colored robotic assistant who learns the new lingo and pop culture references from the Rangers, and was pretty much the character to bring humorous levity whenever the show got a little too dark.
All joking aside, it looks like the late addition of Alpha 5 means Hader will be doing some post-production voiceover work, as the cast may have already completed their interactions with the character. This wouldn’t be the first time that Hader has done work on a robot. He provided voice consultation for BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But I believe that Alpha-5 will speaking in more than just bleeps and bloops. Hader was also the voice of Fear in Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, and Leonard/King Mudbeard in The Angry Birds Movie. So it’s pretty safe to say that Power Rangers found the right person to voice their funny robotic assistant. We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of voice he utilizes to bring the character to life.
Power Rangers stars singer Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Black Ranger Zack, newcomer Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott (Lemonade Mouth) as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) as Blue Ranger Billy. Lionsgate will release the film on March 24, 2017.
