This one was new for me. I’m not sure how it has eluded me for so long, but I must admit that I am smitten. Black Hammer Volume 1: Secret Origins collects the first six issues of the series into one volume that tells a cohesive story all the while exploring what it is to be alone and yet together. This dilemma is the result of a sacrifice gone too far. Not to say that the group wasn’t grateful, just that isolation and protection does not always equal freedom.
Formerly a super team of champions that defended the great Spiral City from overwhelming hordes of villains over the years, our now rurally based group appears more as an eccentric and dysfunctional family to all who meet them. Caught within a town that seemingly never aged, they find themselves agonizing over attempts to free themselves and once again walk unfettered. But there is something more working behind the scenes to draw the team towards the unknown. What is it that is holding them all there and why has a stranger suddenly found them?
Old school art paired with a depth that only modern comics explore wholeheartedly, that is what you will get here. It was original while also an obvious play off of other iconic heroes. Neither a parody nor an homage, this comic book series takes a serious look at real life struggles from a point of view seldom seen. I urge fans of the silver age comics to jump in head first, you will be amazed at how much you’ll like it!
Once they were heroes. Now, banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City lead simple lives in a timeless farming town. But as they attempt to free themselves from this strange purgatory, a mysterious stranger works to bring them back into action for one last adventure! Collects issues #1–#6 of the series.
