Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water

The latest from Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, titled The Shape of Water, has been given a release date.

Fox Searchlight has settled on a date in the midst of awards season, locking in December 8, 2017 for the movie. The Shape of Water is set in 1963 Cold War-era America, and the story deals with the discovery of secret experiment at a high-security government lab.

More info including a more detailed description can be found below.

The movie, which del Toro also co-wrote along with Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones, Divergent), stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and one of del Toro’s most common collaborators, Doug Jones.

In addition to announcing the release date, this brief description was also released:

Set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963, the “other-worldly fairytale” centers on Elisa (Hawkins), a lonely woman who is trapped in a life of silence and isolation within the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works. Her life is changed forever when she and her co-worker Zelda (Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.

Del Toro’s most recent projects include directing the 2015 Gothic horror Crimson Peak, and the Netflix animated series Trollhunters.

The director always has a pile of potential projects to jump on, but possibilities for his next movie include a dark re-telling of the Pinocchio fairy tale, and the third movie in his loosely connected Spanish Civil War trilogy, which thus far consists of arguably his two greatest works, 2001’s The Devil’s Backbone and 2006’s Pan’s Labyrinth.

With it once again being proven recently that R-rated movies can do well at the box office still, so long as talented people are making them, I’m sure many wouldn’t be sad at all to see del Toro’s take on H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness rise from the grave after the disappointing outcome of his attempts to make it a handful of years ago, either.

Now, given that The Shape of Water is coming out in less than a year, hopefully we’ll get to see a trailer fairly soon.
