SXSW 2018: DC Creators Talk The Future Of Superman Ahead Of Action Comics #1000

Superman Donut wall

One huge benefit of reuniting Superman with his iconic red trunks is the amount of attention it creates, which is very useful for DC Comics as it embarks on a brand new era for the Man of Steel. Case in point, the promotion pairs red underwear featuring #thetrunksareback hashtag on the back as well as a wall of Voodoo Doughnuts in the shape of Superman’s shield at this year’s SXSW (see photos above and below).

And what an era it’s shaping up to be already.

Superman Red Trunks SXSW

“Even when we first took the trunks away we knew that they would return eventually, like all things in comics,” said DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee. “No one remains dead, no trunks will remain unworn.”

In addition to the red trunks announcement, DC Comics held a panel discussion with Superman creators from past, present, and future (Dan Jurgens, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, and Brian Michael Bendis) via its pop-up store SXSW this weekend about the upcoming milestone Action Comics #1000, DC’s new Black Label imprint, and what’s in store for our hero in the months ahead.

DC Superman Panel SXSW

Action Comics #1000 is an extra packed issue that will see current scribe Jurgens depart the book, having written a fifth of the entire series’ run. Jurgens, who told the crowd “I don’t know if we ever really say goodbye in comics,” described his swan song story within the issue as being a perfect vehicle to give a couple final statements about the character before walking away. The story is called “For the City that has Everything” — a play on words and similar in tone to the classic Alan Moore storyline (“For the Man Who Has Everything”), which will address what Superman means for the people of Metropolis.

The issue is also where you can find Bendis’ first Superman story, a 12-page tale with art from Lee that “should set up everything you need to know” heading into the first full issue of his run, as well as a Man of Steel 6-issue miniseries, which you can read more about here.

Frank Miller’s new DC Black Label Superman Series

The SXSW panel also included details about the upcoming DC Black Label Superman: Year One book from the legendary Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.

“The whole idea behind this book is to introduce Superman as if you’ve never heard of him, and bring him back to some of the things that makes the character so extraordinary: the galactic voyage he takes as a boy, the way he discovers the world, the way he’s so emblematic of a hero’s journey,” Miller said. “He’s biblical in dimensions. For me its going from the gloomy dark guy to the hero of the sun.”

That’s welcomed news for anyone expecting Kal-El to share many similarities with the way he’s presented in The Dark Knight Returns — a seemingly do-no-wrong boy scout in the back pocket of bureaucracy and political power.

Miller is also just as excited to be teaming back up with Romita: “It’s like going to heaven without dying. He’s magic. Every time I talk over a scene with him, whatever he comes back with is brilliant and much better than I could have done.”
