If you are looking for a reason to explain Jeremy Renner‘s notable absence from Avengers: Infinity War, then you can say he was busy playing a game of tag. No, literally, he was busy playing tag. I’m not kidding.
Warner Bros has dropped the first trailer for TAG, a comedy that centers on a group of friends (played by Renner, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, and Ed Helms) who have been playing a 30-year game of tag. When Renner’s character, who hasn’t been tagged since they started, announces that he is getting married, the others believe it’s their opportunity to finally get him. Check out the trailer for the film below.
If you think the premise of this comedy is completely absurd, just know that it is based on a true story. How a simple game of tag escalated this far is a testament to their commitment to the childish game. So, of course, it would be turned into a film.
And it’s not as though Hamm, Fisher, Johnson, Buress, and Helms aren’t up to the task. We’ve all seen them flex their comedic muscles in other films that rely on physicality. Just how much pain are they willing to take in order to make Renner it, and what will Renner do in order to avoid being it.
Again, it may sound just completely crazy on paper and in this trailer, but I think it could be one of the best comedies of the summer, which is normally just full of action blockbusters.
Here’s the official premise for the film:
For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade””risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!”
This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming”¦and he’s ready.
Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.
The film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Rashida Jones, and Leslie Bibb.
Directed by Jeff Tomsic (Broad City) and written by Rob McKittrick (Waiting) and Mark Steilen (Mozart in the Jungle), TAG is set to hit theaters on June 15, 2018.
