John Wick (Keanu Reeves) will be back. Again. And that isn’t such a bad thing, especially if you are a huge fan of the franchise. This seems to put any unease to rest after John Wick: Chapter 3 had an ambiguous ending. More on the report below.
Variety says John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming next year. The initial announcement was made to fans who signed up for a text service that was launched by Lionsgate.
The sequel announcement comes on the heels of John Wick: Chapter 3 taking the number one spot at the box office this past weekend with a $56.8 million domestic take, dethroning Avengers: Endgame by nearly double its fourth-weekend haul of $30 million. According to the report, John Wick: Chapter 3 outperformed initial expectations and previous release debuts.
Having not seen John Wick: Chapter 3, yet, I only have been told that it ends on am ambiguous note, leaving me to think that Mr. Wick still has some unfinished business to attend to. Obviously, the mythology of this former assassin will extend much further than we realized. But part of the fun of this franchise was the world that surrounds these characters. From the High Table and the cleaning crew to the internationally renowned and super sleek Continental Hotel and so much more. While there is plenty to explore, there is also an endgame to it all. Or at least there should be.
But what the sequel proves is that this franchise continues to work.
So it should be interesting to see how Reeves and director Chad Stahelski, both of whom have been part of the franchise since the very beginning, will expand on the franchise. While it has been fun to see the two build upon this world that is fun and deliciously violent, there has to be an end. And it has to be a fitting one. We will just have to wait and see where it all goes from here. And based on what we have seen so far, there is no where else to go but up.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 21, 2020.
