James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting DC Extended Universe films. The film will bring back some original characters like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as squad leader Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
And, of course, there are the newcomers to the cast like Idris Elba, who is playing a role that has yet to be named. But he isn’t the only one new to the cast. Reports say that Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi and Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson will be a part of the soft reboot. More on the report below.
Deadline says it’s not clear who Capaldi will be playing and that Davison will only be coming in for a small role, one that will be shot during the break SNL will have. The report adds that a table read will begin on September 11, 2019, with production starting on September 23, 2019.
Though very little is known about the plot of the soft reboot, we know that at least four of the key players from the first will be coming back. One of the most notable members not returning is Deadshot (played in the first movie by Will Smith), as well as Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez). Also missing is Joker (Jared Leto), although, that might be considered a blessing considering all of the flack the character got for his portrayal in the film.
Other newcomers include Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, and Taika Waititi, all of whom are playing unnamed roles. However, we know that David Dastmalchian will play Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior stars as Ratcatcher, and Steve Agee voices King Shark.
One has to wonder who Capaldi will be playing and what the size of his role in the film will be. Davidson seems to be there for something very small considering that he is scheduled to shoot his role during the Saturday Night Live break. Capaldi, a BAFTA-award winning actor, is probably best known for his work on Doctor Who, while Davidson has been making us laugh (and sometimes cry) with his performances and willingness to be open about his personal life on SNL.
We will keep you up to date on any new developments for the upcoming Suicide Squad, which is scheduled to open in theaters on August 6, 2021.
