San Diego Convention Center Expansion

The San Diego Comic Con is the end-all be-all of yearly movie, TV, and comic book conventions. It’s the convention where the biggest movies show off their newest footage, it’s where major announcements are made, and there is no other better place for one to completely disappear into an ocean of excited fanboys and girls who are buzzing with excitement…and likely dressed as their favorite characters.

Due to this scorching Summer celebration of all things geek, popularity in the convention has constantly grown over the years. It’s gotten to the point where so many people attend it’s painfully impossible to comfortably attend; hotels are hard to find, lines are infinite, and the many various halls replace oxygen with far more people than capacity would indicate.

With San Diego’s claim to the convention set for expiration in 2012, many other locations have began bidding for the right to claim it as their own. And because of the many aforementioned flaws, this has not sounded like the worst idea ever, despite the fact that it would be strange for Comic Con to be held anywhere but its beautiful San Diego home.

WonderCon 2010: Geeks of Doom Coverage

Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2010

I’m currently sitting on a flight bound for San Francisco where I will provide Geeks of Doom’s coverage of WonderCon 2010 — thus kicking off convention season, which is far more exciting than baseball and football season by default of it being acceptable for those in attendance to dress like The Batman and/or Slave Leia.

“Ridiculously excited” would be an obvious understatement.

Of course if you can’t make it to the convention this year, you can always follow @geeksofdoom on Twitter for all the latest news from WonderCon 2010 and also live vicariously through my own experience by following me at @tched.

This year the show is chock full o’ DC Comics panels — many of which feature new Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. With the Blackest Night arc coming to a close, I’m extremely curious to hear what’ll be revealed about the next big DCU event, Brightest Day.

There’s also plenty of panels with creators and actors from this summer’s big movies — including Kick Ass, Prince of Persia, Resident Evil: Afterlife. There’s also some great stuff in TV with BBC showing the premiere of Doctor Who: Season 5 and a panel for NBC’s Chuck.

Wizard World Atlanta Take Two

2009-01-26-wizardworld_atlWizard Entertainment announced Atlanta as the ninth location for their Wizard World Comic Conventions with no date attached as of this report.

The “TBD” status is enough to send a chill up the spine of smaller comic and entertainment convention promoters who remember the fervor that swept over the industry during Wizard’s first attempt at an Atlanta show in 2006. The company scheduled their event for the same date as the Charlotte, NC Hero Con — a move that caused guests to take sides and eventually derail the show completely.

That was over four years ago and Wizard hasn’t been back, until now. This time, however, their actions suggest trying to avoid conflict by purchasing one (of four) of the 16-year-old Atlanta Comic Convention events from veteran show promoter Wes Tillander.

As for any overlap, there would be concerns when it comes to the smaller niche Cons held in the city but the long-standing Dragon*Con is likely to be a safe haven if not only for the major hotels all being booked well in advance for the 2010 Labor Day weekend show.

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon Con 2009

Dragon*Con 2009 has come and gone now, but the goodies may just never stop. We really spoil you kids.

Today comes another harvest of mini-interviews composed of course by Mighty Tide of Justice’s Doug and Rob, and featuring some more of the convention’s best in show. As we all know, conventions like this one are mass gathering points for those who simply love to dress up as their most-favoritest of geeky characters and walk the floors proudly. So who better to have a little chat with, I ask thee? No one, that’s who!

In this installment, we’ll meet two interesting folks. First up is Loxida Delude, the fittingly geek-named hairdresser from Tennessee who’s all dolled up as a Night Elf Druid. She’ll share her convention experience and her gaming vices us. Next up will be a young man who is attending the convention with his mother and father, and claims to be dressed as a character from the game Kingdom Hearts 2, though I kind of think he’s a closet Twilighter and actually dressed up as Robert Pattinson. That hair puts wild to shame.

Click over to the other side to see the two videos.

Geeks of Doom Invade WonderCon 2009

ScarletScribe and I landed in San Francisco last night and spent the morning at the San Francisco MoMa. Now, we’re off to WonderCon 2009 for some comics, movies, and video game goodness.

This afternoon will mostly be spent walking the Con floor and if the line isn’t too insane, maybe we’ll catch the Animated Wonder Woman movie tonight. We’ll also be attempting to find reasonable food and beverages, as well catch up with our friends Peter (/Film), Alex (FS), and Mike (GWS), who will undoubtedly lead us into some kind of trouble (which Peter will surely document via video camera).

Big Apple Comic Expo 2008 Picture Report

Big Apple Comic Expo, Nov. '08This past Saturday, I had the privilege of getting invited to the National, also known as the New York Big Apple Con. Held over 3 days, The National is one of the biggest comic conventions held in in New York City and one of the few that still even resembles what a comic convention use to be: a place that showcases comic books. Braving the rain and wind, I did my best impersonation of Jimmy Olsen and took some pictures of my day at the convention. I hope you enjoy looking at these pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Dragon*Con Countdown: The Costumes

By TechGOnzo

Dragon Con Countdown: The Costumes I’m standing at the bottom of Nashville’s Union Station stairwell watching a guy wearing a skirt take pictures of Catwoman and Poison Ivy (that’s the photo at right). This seems somewhat reasonable to me since I was invited to the photo shoot days before, however, I cannot say the same for my fellow Nashvillians, who when passing by would slow their pace to take in the situation. One of the passers usually looked somewhat amused and then immediately stated the obvious while another passer would pronounce the absurdity with a contorted facial expression.

Such is life in the southern United States, with the exception of one long weekend for the past 20 years, where the capes and cowls take over the city of Atlanta’s largest downtown hotels for Dragon*Con. If the Legion of Super-Heroes ever became a reality, it would look like this minus the powers. It is a 4-day pocket dimension where you’ll bear witness to Adam West-era Batman eating tater-tots next to the Blob who chose the salad platter. The costumes are everywhere.

“Dragon*Con is all about costuming,” says the photographer, Derek Deweese, who regularly dresses up in multiple costumes for the event, which actually isn’t restricted to super-hero attire. A variety of people mimicking characters that spans across every genre: sci-fi, fantasy, horror, mystery, etc.
