Having the very unfortunate disposition of costing $150 million to make, and only bringing back $38 million worldwide in return, Walt Disney’s Mars Needs Moms can be considered one of the biggest flops of all time…and that, my friends, is not a good thing to have hovering over you. But is the movie really as bad as this monumental flop indicates, or are there redeeming qualities worth seeking out?

The movie follows Milo, (performance captured by Seth Green, voiced by Seth Robert Dusky), a normal everyday boy who has a bit of an argument with his mother (Joan Cusack). As most boys would, he feels badly about snapping at her with some very unkind words, and proceeds to go and apologize. But when he reaches her bedroom, a strange bright light is making its way through the bottom of the door, and he goes in to check out what it is. When he enters, he sees some sort of craft zooming away, and, realizing his mom is gone, runs after it only to find a spaceship, which he sees has taken his mother.

As far as comic books go I’m not quite as knowledgeable as many of our other fine reviewers here at Geeks of Doom, but I do like to work on that whenever I get the opportunity. So when the chance to check out a wild and wacky comic from actor Dan Fogler called Moon Lake came around, I was excited to take a peek.

The comic is a collection of short stories, and when I say “wild and wacky” I truly mean it. These stories are completely vulgar and graphic and oozing immaturity, and that can only mean one thing: comedic gold.

From sex-frenzied monkey-peoples at a sex-frenzied summer camp the week before kids arrive to werebears and psycho-killer cheerleaders stuck in a sunshine and rainbows dreamland to a warrior woman and a dinosaur — they’re all in here.

Mars Needs Moms

A new trailer for Mars Needs Moms is now online. Check it out here below.

The film is one of Disney’s upcoming non-Pixar animated films. It tells the story of Milo, a 9-year-old whose mother gets abducted by aliens so that they can rob her of her “mom-ness” to use with their own young. The film stars Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois, Mindy Sterling, and Kevin Cahoon. It’s directed by Simon Wells who brought us the remake of The Time Machine. The film is produced by Robert Zemeckis who brought us Cast Away and The Polar Express. Yes, he also directed Back to the Future.

Mars Needs Moms is based on a critically acclaimed book from Berkeley Breathed, the Pulitzer Prize winning author and illustrator of the comic strip Bloom County. He based the book on a disagreement he had with his son also named Milo.

FanboysCinematical has premiered a new poster for the forever-in-limbo comedy Fanboys. Check it out out at right and click for large view.

This latest poster is a take-off of the Judd Apatow comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which is a very different marketing angle than the original Return of the Jedi-inspired one-sheet (see it here).

I think we’re at the point now where it’s safe to say that The Weinstein Company truly does not know what to do with this movie.

“Recently, studio head Harvey Weinstein told the LA Times that Fanboys has been moved to January 2009 so that it can be involved in a major promotion and large advertising tie-in with Comcast. This was a film that was supposed to be released early 2007, then got moved to August 2007, then was held in limbo after reports surfaced that a major plot point was removed. So, if it will actually be released in January — typically a death warrant for most films, except Cloverfield — remains to be seen.
