Forbidden PlanetImmediately after finding out that James Cameron himself was pondering taking the directing duties for the Forbidden Planet remake (see Will James Cameron Direct The ‘Forbidden Planet’ Remake?) from writer J. Michael Straczynski, Latino Review has obtained some details on the project that are pretty interesting.

It turns out that the script that Straczynski has been working on is actually a prequel story and that his plan/hope is to do this trilogy style.

For those who aren’t familiar with 1952 scifi classic, the story follows a team on a mission to a planet to find another team that landed there 20 years prior. When they arrive there, they meet a robot who takes them to one of the members of the missing crew, who’s made a home there after something destroyed their entire ship and team a year after they arrived.

CameronIESB has gotten word from an inside source that James Cameron has a lot of interest in directing the remake of Forbidden Planet that’s in the works at Warner Brothers.

Apparently Cameron has had a lot of interest over the years, starting after he did Titanic. That never worked out and he hasn’t really done much else until now, working on his super-mega-epic sci-fi movie, Avatar.

Forbidden Planet has been in the news a bit recently due to Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski writing the script.

Forbidden PlanetChangeling screenwriter and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski spoke to MTV about his upcoming script for Forbidden Planet and the direction he wants to see it go.

He assured people that this won’t be some cheesy retro look like the original because when the original came out, that was all new and scary to people; that was what people hadn’t seen before, and that’s the kind of thing he wants to accomplish with this new project.

Straczynski mentioned how he saw the project and watched it going from studio to studio and when it was about to become available again, he went to producer Joel Silver and went for it.

I told Joel [Silver] this is how you do “˜Forbidden Planet’ without pissing on the original that no one has ever thought of. When I told [the idea] to him, his eyes lit up. It’s not a remake. It’s not a reimagining. It’s not exactly a prequel. You’ll have to see it. It’s something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline.

Forbidden PlanetForbidden Planet is one of those projects you hear about that’s been attached to so many names and so many studios, you just don’t know what’s what anymore. Currently, however, the remake-revision of the 1956 sci-fi movie is trying to get going again with J. Michael Straczynski hired to write the script.

Straczynski wrote the new Clint Eastwood movie Changeling, but does have a background in the world of science fiction, having created Babylon 5 and is working on multiple other projects including the Wachowski Brothers’ Ninja Assassin.

The 1956 Forbidden Planet follows an expedition to a far away planet to check on a team of scientists. They find two of them, a doctor, his daughter and a man who discovered an alien technology that has doubled his level of intelligence. It’s being produced by Joel Silver.
