New ‘Forbidden Planet’ To Be A Prequel AND Possible Trilogy!

The Movie God   |  @   |

Forbidden PlanetImmediately after finding out that James Cameron himself was pondering taking the directing duties for the Forbidden Planet remake (see Will James Cameron Direct The ‘Forbidden Planet’ Remake?) from writer J. Michael Straczynski, Latino Review has obtained some details on the project that are pretty interesting.

It turns out that the script that Straczynski has been working on is actually a prequel story and that his plan/hope is to do this trilogy style.

For those who aren’t familiar with 1952 scifi classic, the story follows a team on a mission to a planet to find another team that landed there 20 years prior. When they arrive there, they meet a robot who takes them to one of the members of the missing crew, who’s made a home there after something destroyed their entire ship and team a year after they arrived.

For this project, it looks as if the first movie would actually follow the first team’s mission to the planet — something that hasn’t been seen yet. The second movie would follow the surviving crew of the first ship and their search for what caused the devastation to his crew and ship. Finally, the third movie would navigate the familiar storyline of the search crew looking for the team that went missing 20 years ago.

Everything sounds pretty exciting here, and I can only imagine how this would look if done correctly. The only problem that I can see is currently the best thing going for the project, which is the rumors of James Cameron’s interest in directing. Cameron doesn’t do a movie a year or one every two years… his movies seem to come by the decade. Would he buckle down to help create this trilogy or would he only do the first and then hand the next off to another director? I guess even if he does the first, at least the foundation would be set, and that would be pretty nifty.

  1. A “Forbidden Planet” Remake would not only be unwanted but unnecessary. (As are most Hollywood remakes) What part of classic do these corporate executives not understand and how lazy is the industry!?
