Geeks everywhere were upset when it was announced that the popular G4 channel shows X-Play and Attack of the Show! would be canceled, and that the channel itself was to be re-branded as a channel aimed toward an “upscale” male audience, later confirmed to be called Esquire Network.

The final change was set to take place on September 23rd, but like a wrongly convicted man being saved from the electric chair by a phone call seconds before the switch was to be flipped, a last minute announcement has changed things. Now, instead of G4 it will by the Style channel being re-branded as Esquire Network.

Attack of the Show Image

G4, the channel aimed toward a geek audience, has decided to cancel its two best programs, Attack of the Show! and X-Play. The shows will continue through the end of this year.

The announcement comes as G4 now apparently is looking to transform itself into a network aimed toward an “upscale” male audience, similarly to the magazines GQ or Esquire (who could be companies that G4 is looking to partner with down the road), instead of anyone interested in video games and geek culture.

The news will not only stun the fans of these two shows that have been on the air for the past 7-9 years, but will also come as something of a blow to the faithful following who will wonder why G4 would want to wander from geek to upscale male-aimed content.

2010-03-02_heraldsEarlier today Marvel released a teaser image with the tagline, “What is HERALDS?” with a hint at how to find out. The question was answered on tonight’s Attack of the Show, the G4 genre-focused show.

The teaser image (here at right) shows several Marvel heroines, including Agent Brand, Hellcat, Emma Frost, She-Hulk, and more. The image is a geek guy’s wet dream, with hot, scantily-clad women fighting a dinosaur, a robot, and zombies, oh my! Looks awesome to me, I’ll be picking it up, will you?

Marvel revealed info about the new series exclusively to G4TV’s Blair Butler. Heralds will be a new 5-issue weekly series, which will debut in June, about a female former herald of Galactus and a new threat she poses. Check out G4’s 4-minute video here below for more details and a sneak peek at the panels.
