Hair of the Dog, by the Scottish hard rock foursome Nazareth, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.00. The CD is currently only $4.99 and is an AutoRip, which means it includes a FREE MP3 version of this album.
By 1975, Nazareth had been kicking around for a few years in the rock community with their unapologetic guitar riff power tunes and equally powered ballads. By the time Hair of the Dog was released (their sixth album), they were already a seasoned pressure cooker of an ensemble. It arguably reached the boiling point with this record, as the iron gate sounding snappiness of the title track, with its memorable “Now You’re Messing With A Son of a Bitch” chorus refrain, blasted through the turntables, 8-tracks and cassette players at the time like muskets firing loud crackling gunfire into the air. The painful aching strong ballad lament of “Love Hurts” holds equality as well to the more harder tunes on the record, like the aforementioned title track, and “Miss Misery,” “Changin’ Times,” and “Beggars Day” which go through the Zeppelin/Sabbath/Deep Purple by numbers paces, but are lifted into the band’s own individuality by the guttural, intimidating vocals by the bushy haired Dan McCafferty and the slick, yet bluesy guitar playing of Manny Charlton, who also produced the record. Like the bands Thin Lizzy and Uriah Heep, Nazareth have had their day in the sun albeit briefly in terms of radio airplay and above ground success with Hair of the Dog, but have remained a cult band to the masses who have followed them before it and continue to follow them long after its release.
