In a world that now sees online streaming, or VoD (Video On-Demand seems to be the cliché buzzword at the moment) becoming a dominant wave in the future, one of the leaders in this field is Netflix.

We’ve heard talks about plans to try offering big Hollywood movies on demand not too long after they’re released in theaters for a while now, and it looks like those who support the idea are ready to test the waters.

According to the LA Times, Universal Pictures will offer up Brett Ratner‘s new movie, Tower Heist, three weeks after its November 4, 2011 theatrical release through Universal parent company Comcast’s on demand services. The movie will only be available to 500,000 customers in the Atlanta and Portland, Oregon areas to test the waters of this new option, and those of you who have this option will only have to throw down $59.99 to check the movie out.

Universal and Comcast will pay close attention to how well the movie does released this early and at this price, while firm eyes will also be focused on how offering a movie three weeks after theatrical release affects box office numbers.

This week, Amazon is offering up some great movie and television deals through their Video On Demand service. Of note, TODAY only, you can buy the entire Season 5 of NBC’s The Office for only $9.99 — that’s 26 episodes for ten bucks! And coming up on Wednesday, you can purchase the entire Season 1 of USA’s In Plain Slight for only $2.99! That’s all 12 hour-long episodes of the series.

Also available right are some Video On Demand Movies under $6 for purchase, with titles like The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, The Karate Kid, The Godfather, The Matrix, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and tons more!

If you had the option to watch the biggest and best new movies in your living room on the day that they were released in theaters, would you take it? Even if it meant that movie theaters would suffer greatly, and maybe even disappear?

In November of 2009, the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) submitted a request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asking that it be allowed for new movies to be available in the comfort of people’s homes either on the day of theatrical release or sometime soon after release so that those who can’t make it out to theaters have the option to see films when they’re new.

Yesterday, the MPAA announced that the FCC had indeed approved of the request, making this future movie-watching option official. This was somewhat impossible for a while, but it looks like the deciding factor is that now there is the proper “selectable output control,” which allows for the highest-quality HD films to be offered securely. This should prevent would-be bootleggers from just using their own outputs to acquire the HD-quality films illegally from home.
