The Magicians roundtable, NYCC 2016

At New York Comic-Con Saturday afternoon, I got a chance to sit down with the cast of The Magicians at the roundtable press interviews, and really get in-depth about their characters, scenes, and what’s in store for season 2. On hand were Jason Ralph (Quentin Coldwater), Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice Quinn), Summer Bishil (Margo Hanson), Hale Appleman (Eliot Waugh), Jade Tailor (Kady Orloff-Diaz), Stella Maeve (Julia Wicker), and EPs and writers Sera Gamble and John McNamara.

Last time on The Magicians, Julia (Stella Maeve) tried to use her womanly wiles on Pete (David Call), so he would help her find another witchy group. Quentin’s (Jason Ralph) father was diagnosed with cancer and refusing treatment, so Quentin tried to find a magical cure via the use of an enchanted puppy who died anyway (noooo!!!). Everyone was trying to find a mentor. Eliot and Margo (Hale Appleman and Summer Bishil) wanted Alice’s (Olivia Taylor Dudley) aunt, but in the end all their machinations and ass-kissing failed. Penny (Arjun Gupta) accidentally traveled to Fillory, where he saw the Beast and a girl chained up.

Last week on The Magicians, Quentin (Jason Ralph) spent most of the episode pissing off the women in his life. First, he told Julia (Stella Maeve) she wasn’t good enough to get into Brakebills (ouch!). Then, by trapping Alice’s (Olivia Taylor Dudley) brother Charlie in a niffin-box (because he’s a niffin), thereby preventing her from ever getting him back. Alice leaves the school. But before all that, The Sorting Hat aka the magic specialty examination, labels the kids – Penny (Arjun Gupta) is a Traveler, Alice can bend light, and Quentin can do nothing… for now. They go live with Eliot (Hale Appleman) in the physical cottage (Alice for all of one day).

The Magicians 101-04

With only 3 episodes under its belt, Syfy has renewed The Magicians for a 2nd season. The series, based on the Lev Grossman novel of the same name, follows the tale of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), tapped to test for Brakebill’s College for Magical Pedagogy – secret magic college! His best friend Julia (Stella Maeve) does not pass, yet finds another way into a darker magical education. In the meantime, the world of Fillory (a childhood storybook realm), is threatening his world, and the life of him and his new magic friends.
