SDCC 2013: The Worlds End panel banner

Film fans have patiently waited six years since 2007’s buddy cop spoof Hot Fuzz, for director Edgar Wright to conclude his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, which began in 2004 with rom zom com Shaun of the Dead. Edgar Wright was reunited today with his co-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at San Diego’s Comic-Con for a discussion of the final film in the trilogy, The World’s End. The Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick moderated.

The panel kicked off with a video retrospective of the trilogy before introducing the team. Hardwick noted The World’s End has a Doctor Who vibe, and Wright agreed it’s as if The Doctor was hammered, so ‘Doctor Hooch’. Pegg said his character, Gary, is a bit of a dick, but with a dark truth that explains his dickishness. Still stuck in the nineties, dressing like a sad goth. Frost described his character, Andy as an angry, buttoned-down, “hard nut,” lawyer type.

SDCC 2013: Entertainment Weekly Visionaries panel

Day one of San Diego Comic-Con was host to a meeting of three of the best directors working today, as Entertainment Weekly brought fans a discussion of all things movies with their “Visionaries” panel. On hand to discuss their work was Edgar Wright (The World’s End, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World), Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), and Marc Webb (Amazing Spider-Man).

The panel was a chance to hear the directors talk about the process of their current films. Cuaron spoke at length about the issues they had simulating the zero G conditions needed to film Gravity, including creating a special room that was just an empty box that a camera would move around in. He also talked about how Gravity stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock would try to imitate the director’s Mexican accent (he said though that they sounded more Cuban than Mexican). Cuaron explained how Steven Spielberg’s Duel was a big influence on Gravity.

Webb also spoke of similar issues that went into the filming of the Amazing Spider-Man 2. Webb talked about using Electro as a villain not just because of his powers, but also because it forces Spider-Man to think of creative ways to defeat him. Webb was also excited to show off the visuals of Electro, which is something that drove him to use him as the villain. Webb then spoke to how the documentary Fog of War influenced Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg

If you’re excited about The World’s End, the new movie from director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost that follows Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to close out the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, you’re going to enjoy this video.

In it, Wright, Pegg, and Frost sit down for some tea and a chat with papa Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, who’s resting comfortably in his chair and wearing cozy wool socks. Jackson had a cameo in the second film of the trilogy and they’re all obviously friendly, so it’s pretty awesome to see them sitting back and chatting shop. The group discusses making The World’s End, from how the idea was born to various complications that arose.

You can check out the video below now. And be sure to watch to the end (starting at about 17:45) for some good ol’ papa Peter wisdom!

The World's End Header

The first domestic trailer for Edgar Wright‘s The World’s End gives us another look at the final installment of the director’s comedic pseudo-trilogy, better known as the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy. Each of those films covered a particular genre and gave it a comedic twist. Shaun of the Dead was a zombies, while Hot Fuzz was police/action, now The World’s End focuses on an entirely different genre, one that has apocalyptic implications. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite with Wright for a third time, and they are joined by Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, and Eddie Marsan.

Check out the new trailer below.

The World's End Image

First came Shaun of the Dead in 2004. Then came Hot Fuzz in 2007. And soon, The World’s End shall arrive. But before that happens later this summer, the very first trailer for the movie has been released, and is calling to you with songs of promised joy and laughter.

None of the movies are actually related, but they all belong to the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy (also known as the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy)—a trio of movies from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Ant Man director Edgar Wright that all star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the leads, and all involve a little bit of blood and a little bit of ice cream. Each movie uses a specific flavor of Cornetto ice cream that fits the movie: Shaun of the Dead using a red strawberry flavor for blood and such (you’ve got red on you); Hot Fuzz using the original (blue) Cornetto for the police; and The World’s End will use the mint chocolate chip flavor, possibly signifying aliens or some kind of invasion or perhaps the result of far too much drinking.

Now, join with me in uncontrollable excitement as we continue below to watch (and re-watch) the first trailer for The World’s End!

The World's End Image

Seems like every year Hollywood gets hooked on a certain movie genre and becomes bound and determined to make every third or fourth theatrical release an entry in that genre. This year we’re getting a trio of apocalyptic comedies, all three hitting this summer and two of them co-starring Craig Robinson. But only one of them reunites director Edgar Wright with his frequent creative collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the same all-star team that gave us the classic British comedy series Spaced and the mind-blowing quotable cult masterpieces Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and that is The World’s End.

Pegg recently tweeted a link to the latest poster for The World’s End in advance of the movie’s first trailer, scheduled to debut later this week. You can check out the tweet and poster here below.
