Creepy Archives, Volume 18Creepy Archives, Volume 18
Hardcover | Kindle Edition

Dark Horse Comics
Release date: February 18, 2014
Cover Price: $49.99

Creepy Archives, Volume 18, covers issues 84-88 of the original magazine series, wherein each issues had a theme. For instance, #84 was an “all sports issue,” which while an odd fit on the surface, worked surprisingly well. “All monster” stories was the focus of #85. The next two were Christmas and Mars-themed, with issue #88 being a free-for-all smorgasbord of stories.

Overall, these Creepy Archive collections are blasts from the past, when seemingly all comics seemed more a bit more wondrous, even innocent “” including the horror ones. This volume features art from some of the big, and not so big names of yesteryear, with quality craftsmanship being a key element that they have in common.

Dark Horse Comics: Shaolin Cowboy #1 cover by Geof DarrowShaolin Cowboy #1

Release Date: October 9, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

This isn’t really a number one, but rather part of an ongoing tale, the last issue of Shaolin Cowboy having come out six years ago. With a schedule this spotty, I suppose it seemed smarter to renumber it as a first issue. Because of its sparse text, those picking it up for the first time won’t necessarily be lost, so it’s suitable as an introduction to the character/series.

As noted, the previous issue is six years old, so I can’t really remember the plot (such as it was), and can’t be bothered do dig through my short boxes. I can tell you that the art was insanely detailed and über-violent. And that’s why you buy this comic. For the inventive ways Geof Darrow figures out how to kill people, and for his exquisite renderings illustrating those depictions.

Mighty Thor - SimonsonThe Mighty Thor Omnibus

Drawn by Walt Simonson and Sal Buscema
1192 pages
Marvel Comics
Release Date: April 27, 2011

Whether it is a man dressed like a bat, a military super-soldier, or an Amazonian woman of wonder, superhero stories are essentially modern day myths. Of stories of modern day gods that roam the Earth, there is no hero more godly than the God of Thunder himself, Thor.

With the Thor movie out in theaters and Odin’s son playing a prominent role in the Avengers movie, it seemed only appropriate that Marvel would come out with The Mighty Thor Omnibus.

ISSUES

Infinite Vacation 2The Infinite Vacation #2 (Image Comics – $3.50) – When the first issue of Infinite Vacation came out in January, I was elated with how good the comic was. Nick Spencer continued his reign over comics with another incredibly exciting creator-owned book published by Image. The concept behind the book is that a mobile app gives people the ability to travel throughout the multiverse. The concept of a multiverse is used in many different comics and publishers where there are separate universes with the same characters dealing with different circumstances. But very rarely has the concept of the multiverse been applied to non-superhero characters, but Infinite Vacation does just that. The series has unfortunately met a strong delay with the second issue coming out in April after the first issue came out in January, but the first issue sat with me so strongly, that I’m still excited about this follow-up. So, here’s hoping that the second keeps and amps up the excitement.
