Top Vegetarians of the Geek World!
space
Empress Eve   |  @   |

PETA is searching for the world’s hottest vegetarian celebrities in the animal rights organization’s sixth annual World’s Sexiest Vegetarian poll, with more than 200 entertainers eligible to be crowned this year’s veggie King and Queen. Geeks of Doom has weeded through PETA’s list…and chosen the top celeb vegetarians in the Geek World.

G.o.D. STAFF TOP PICKS

Not only is Leonard Nimoy a vegetarian; the character he is most famous for portraying was the first vegetarian to appear regularly on television. As the first officer aboard the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek, Mr. Spock belongs to the Vulcan race — which does not consume meat. However, people in the Star Trek universe had it a bit easier than vegetarians today. In the 24th century technology made it possible to replicate food to taste like meat without having it come from animals. Leonard Nimoy

Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman (Star Wars, V for Vendetta)
Though only in her early 20s, Natalie Portman is already a queen of the Geek World. As a teenager, she played one of the most prominent and anticipated characters in the Star Wars universe: Padma Amidala, the mother of Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker! A vegetarian since she was nine, the Harvard graduate also reigns supreme as Evey in the recent movie V for Vendetta.

John Cleese
John Cleese (Monty Python, Time Bandits)

Linda Blair made us all think a little differently about green pea soup after her turn as the possessed Regan MacNeil in the Exorcist. Since then, Blair has spent her time with animal rescue missions and has even written an autobiography called GOING VEGAN!

— It wasn’t meat that helped Toby Maguire “beef” up to play Spider-Man. It was lots of tofu.

Daryl Hannah kicked ass as Elle Driver in Kill Bill and as the android Pris in Blade Runner. As Madison the mermaid in Splash, Hannah did not want to do the restaurant scene in which her character chows down on a lobster and its shell. Director Ron Howard finally convinced the vegetarian to do the scene by filling the shell with potatoes!

— While Ian McKellen usually keeps his personal life private, his vegetarianism is no secret (not that there’s anything wrong with that). McKellen’s got double geek cred, thanks to his portrayal as the wizard Gandolf in Lord of the Rings as well as the powerful mutant Magneto in X-Men.

  1. The picture you have for John Cleese is actual Billy Connolly as “Tim the Wizard” in the Holy Grail movie. I think he could be vegetarian too.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Though it does look like Billy Connolly in the pic, he never appeared in the Holy Grail. Also, the character’s name is Tim the Enchanter and was indeed portrayed by John Cleese. For verification go here.]

  3. I’m thinking that since Chris is from generationv.org he probably knows a lot more about vegetarianism / veganism than the supporting roles of John Cleese. Give him a break.

Thanks for checking out our feature regardless!

  11. Claudia, we selected our winners from the list of celebrities on PETA’s poll. There are many other famous people who were NOT on PETA’s list that we think are winners, too, like writers Clive Barker, Alan Moore, and Grant Morrison. Thanks for the props!
